A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

Trainees with the LFP will be in familiar, local surroundings, perhaps even learning to teach in the school or college they went to. They’ll gain confidence from truly understanding the local area and the backgrounds of the pupils they’ll be teaching. This sense of place and belonging will give our teachers of the future that extra boost in their trainee year. Our training programme has been very carefully designed by outstanding practitioners from each alliance school. We are passionate about ensuring that each training session allows you to collaborate, reflect upon your own development and furnishes you with skills essential for a successful teaching career. During your final term you will be provided with the opportunity to further concentrate on an area of education that has ignited your interest. Thus providing a bespoke element that responds to your needs and future aspirations. Learning Futures Partnership offers three routes into primary and secondary teaching through the following phases:

  • Primary Programme
  • Secondary Programme (11-16 phase)
  • Secondary Programme with FE 14-19

School placements

At Learning Futures Partnership, you have 2 placements. An initial placement from September to December followed by a main placement from January to July.

Entry requirements

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree, or equivalent.

Your degree subject should be in physics or a similar subject. Otherwise you’ll need to prove your subject knowledge in some other way.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths, or equivalent qualification.

We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English or maths.

Learning Futures Partnership offers 3 ITT routes: Primary Secondary Secondary with FE

Applicants that are hoping to teach a subject that is not sufficiently related to their first degree but have an A’level in this subject can complete a Subject Knowledge Enhancement course in one of the following subjects.

About the accredited body

The UOC is highly-rated by OFSTED as a provider of successful teachers. 9 /10 of graduates are in work/further study within 15 months of graduating (HESA Graduate Outcomes Survey 2020).Masters credits units receive highly personalised support from their university link tutor. Additional bursaries are available e.g. assist with childcare costs. Parents’ Learning Allowance/means-tested on household income. Maximum available £1,821. A maximum of 85% of your weekly childcare costs may be paid on your behalf/up to £62 per week for one child and £307.95 per week for two or more children.

Adult Dependants’ Grant- means-tested on household income. Maximum available £3,190

Interview process

You will be asked to do a number of tasks on the day:

  • A written task in response to pre-interview reading
  • A Subject Knowledge Audit Candidates will be asked to complete a subject audit in their main subject specialism. This will take the form of a short discussion with an experienced teacher.
  • A Mini-Teach You will be asked to prepare a 20-30 minute activity based on a Key Stage 3 topic that has captured your interest. The purpose of this activity is to show us that you can make your subject interesting and accessible and that you can communicate your enthusiasm for the subject to your audience. We are also interested in how you respond to the feedback that you will be given following your ‘mini teach’.
  • An Individual interview Your individual interview will normally last 15-20 minutes. The interview will usually be conducted by school staff and/or university tutors and will seek to determine your commitment to teaching, identify gaps in your subject knowledge outside of your main subject (there are a number of paths available for improving subject knowledge) and probe your reasons for wanting to enter the profession. We do not expect candidates to have spent some time in a secondary school in but we would like candidates to be able to talk about the reality of working in school. We would also expect all candidates to have some familiarity with the current national curriculum in their subject.

International candidates

You’ll need the right to study in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:

  • are an Irish citizen
  • have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
  • have indefinite leave to remain in the UK

If you do not already have the right to study in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa. The main visa for fee-paying courses (those that you have to pay for) is the Student visa.

To apply for a Student visa, you’ll need to be sponsored by your training provider.

Sponsorship is not available for this course.

If you need a visa, filter your course search to find courses with visa sponsorship.

Alternatively, check if you’re eligible for a different type of visa, such as a Graduate or Family visa, that allows you to train to be a teacher without being sponsored.

Training with disabilities and other needs

We are committed to supporting trainees with disabilities and other needs and aim to be an inclusive provider. We strive to support all our trainees in collaboration with the University of Cumbria. All Alliance schools provide access for students with mobility impairments. Specific mobility issues for the individual schools will be addressed in collaboration with you.

Disabled Students’ Allowance(DSA) — students with a disability or specific learning difficulty may be eligible to receive help towards enabling costs; e.g. non-medical helper, specialist equipment etc.
