A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

About the course

This programme is a high-quality PGCE including QTS (qualified teacher status) with credits towards a Master’s degree.
Trainees will spend a minimum of 120 days in schools and a minimum of 60 days training.
Trainees will be offered full access to the CPD programme for teachers within The Bath and Mendip Partnership Teaching School. This year we will be offering a SEND route. When completing your application please make it clear whether you would like to apply for Primary General or Primary General (SEN Specialism). The route you choose will need to be reflected in your personal statement when completing the application.

School placements

Students spend most of their year (20 weeks) in a “home school”, with additional experiences in two contrasting primary schools or a special school for those opting to take the SEND route offered (two periods of eight weeks each). All host schools are rated as good or outstanding. Candidates will be expected to provide their own transport to their placements, some of which are in rural locations.

Entry requirements

Qualifications needed

You will need to meet the national ITT criteria
Have a 2.2 degree (first degree from UK higher education institution or equivalent). English, Maths, Science GCSE (A*-C). The skills test is currently under review.

Personal qualities

You will need to:

  • Have experience of working with groups of children either in school or in other similar settings.
  • Be able to offer the teaching profession a high level of energy and commitment.
  • Be able to demonstrate resilience and determination.
  • Be passionate about engaging with children’s/young people’s learning journeys.
  • Can demonstrate holding high aspirations for yourself.

A DBS check will be required.

Fees and financial support

The course fees for UK students in 2021 to 2022 are £9,250.

About the training provider

The Partnership Trust offers a primary Initial Teacher Training programme. Fosse Way School, in Radstock, Bath and North East Somerset, has Outstanding OFSTED accreditation (2017) and is the South West co-ordinator and Bath and North East Somerset hub for the Autism Education Trust training programme for schools. Our ITT programme is a high-quality PGCE including QTS (qualified teacher status) with credits towards a Master’s degree.

The Partnership Trust runs a wide ranging programme of Continuing Professional Development opportunities including training for newly qualified teachers, events addressing current issues such as curriculum design, leadership development and many aspects of working with children with special educational needs and disabilities. Our training provider partner is Bath Spa University (www.bathspa.ac.uk) An outstanding teacher training provider Bath Spa University will provide: Accreditation of the programme (PGCE) with recommendation for QTS (qualified teacher status) 60 Level 7 credits (towards a Master’s degree)

Interview process

Interviews will be conducted by the programme lead as well as senior colleagues from partner schools. Candidates will be expected to take part in a group discussion, give a presentation to the recruitment panel, lead a short pupil group activity and undertake a written and numeracy task. Normally only one interview is needed.
