PGCE with QTS
A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.
It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.
Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

Course summary
Our trainees will have two placement schools - Liverpool College or Birkdale High School. You will spend September - February half term in one school and then the rest of the year in the contrasting school. This gives you the chance to form strong links with both staff and pupils in both placements, so that you are genuinely part of the school community.
Liverpool College is a state funded academy which educates boys and girls aged 4-19 on a 28 acre campus in South Liverpool. Since 1840, the schools intent is to empower the young people of Liverpool and beyond to fulfil their dreams by delivering a transformational and exceptional education.
Birkdale High is the only 11-16 all-boys academy in Sefton and aims to be a beacon for outstanding practice in the education of boys. Birkdale High are specialists in the education of boys and firmly believe that this gives them the opportunity to create a unique environment that enables students to develop their full potential both academically and personally, free from many of the gender based prejudices that so often put pressure on young men.
School placements
There are several schools within the alliance from around Liverpool. The main two schools are Liverpool College and Birkdale High School. We aim for all trainee’s to experience two contrasting schools such as a mixed school and a all boys or girls school.

About the training provider
The School Direct teacher training programme allows postgraduate trainees to work closely with a school to gain a teaching qualification, while still having the benefits of university support and study. If you choose to train with Liverpool College and Birkdale High School Direct Alliance, you will participate in the PGCE programme offered by Liverpool Hope University, having your subject training delivered by Liverpool Hope tutors except in Classics which will be delivered by Classics teachers from Liverpool College, whilst your professional development will be provided in both Liverpool College and Birkdale High School by experienced teachers from the two schools. You will also have the opportunity to take part in PGCE conferences and other events organised by Liverpool Hope University. We feel that this mixture gives our trainees the best of both worlds – practical training led by professionals who really know the challenges of school life married with high quality academic input and the opportunity to mix with trainees from across the city region at Liverpool Hope University.
Interview process
Either Liverpool College or Birkdale High will lead the interview. Trainees will be invited to interview at one of the schools where you will undertake a 20 minute observation, an interview with subject specialists, a tour of the school and an opportunity to speak to current trainees and mentors and finally a literacy assessment.

International candidates
You’ll need the right to study in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:
- are an Irish citizen
- have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
- have indefinite leave to remain in the UK
If you do not already have the right to study in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa. The main visa for fee-paying courses (those that you have to pay for) is the Student visa.
To apply for a Student visa, you’ll need to be sponsored by your training provider.
Sponsorship is not available for this course.
If you need a visa, filter your course search to find courses with visa sponsorship.
Alternatively, check if you’re eligible for a different type of visa, such as a Graduate or Family visa, that allows you to train to be a teacher without being sponsored.

International qualifications
If your qualifications come from a non-UK institution, we may want to see a ‘statement of comparability’ from UK ENIC. This will show us how they compare to UK qualifications.
You can call Get Into Teaching on 0800 389 2500 for:
- guidance on the UK equivalents of your qualifications
- a free statement of comparability once you’ve submitted your application (if we ask you for this)
