About the course

The Redriff Primary School Direct programme is a school-based model of teacher training where trainees are employed by a school within the partnership for an academic year (These schools include Redriff Primary School and Galleywall Primary School).

Trainees are released for approximately 40 days to complete academic study at Goldsmiths College. There is also the opportunity to work at another contrasting school for a 6-week placement.

The programme covers all the National Curriculum subjects, and in each curriculum area, you will have the opportunity to develop understanding of the teaching and learning process, and to learn about effective classroom practice.

In addition to the work in classrooms and the academic studies, trainees will benefit from all school-based training. Trainees will have the opportunity to visit the school’s on site resource base for children with Autism as well as observe teaching in Early Years, Key Stage One and Key Stage Two to learn about different approaches to teaching and learning.

Trainees will be provided with a variety of support across their training year including both a school and university based mentor who will work with the trainee to develop a bespoke developmental plan to improve teaching practice.

This programme offers a PGCE with QTS and is assessed through observations of classroom competency, evidence to show the ability to meet the Department for Education Professional Standards as well as a series of academic assignments.

The school-based route of teacher training offered at Redriff Primary School is a dynamic programme of practical learning and academic study, which allows trainees to develop their skills and prepares them for their teaching career.

School placements

Redriff Primary is a lead school and students will be placed here or at Galleywall Primary, our sister school.

Students can be placed in any year group from Nursery to Year 2.

We are partnered with a number of schools which is where students can undertake their six-week placement, however, we are open to students finding their own suitable placements.

Entry requirements

Qualifications needed

We require a minimum of a 2:2 honours degree and GCSEs in English Language and Maths plus Science at grade C/4 or above. Redriff does not accept ‘additional’ or ‘applied’ GCSE subjects. For equivalency testing Redriff will only accept tests from www.equivalencytesting.com

About the training provider

Redriff is a dynamic, vibrant and friendly school in a diverse and multicultural area. In 2011, OFSTED recognised the school as being an ‘outstanding’ school. We are looking for trainee teachers with passion and determination, who love working with children to join our team of dedicated staff.

Redriff provides an excellent training programme for the students on the schools direct course. We help with their professional development as well as their knowledge of primary education. Our welcoming, friendly staff are committed to supporting students in their training year and we have a wealth of expertise working within the school, to gain advice and support from.

We are a two-form entry school with positive, happy children, hardworking staff and supportive parents and governors. We are a fully inclusive school and have a resource base, The Boathouse, for children with autism.

Redriff has been a training school for a number of years and has trained many students successfully through the Schools Direct Programme. We ensure that we personalise the programme for each individual who trains with us to ensure they can become the best teacher they can be.
