About the course
Students will be assigned to a class and the class teacher will be their mentor for the year. They will spend four days of the week at school and on Fridays they will receive training at the Institute of Education. They will also be assigned a tutor from the IoE who will visit them 5 days throughout the year to check on their progress.
As part of the course students will write essays and carry out directed tasks which will be discussed with their Institute tutor. Students will attend training events organised by the school through the year and will work with their class mentor to plan and teach lessons as well as to assess children’s progress.
For six weeks students will undertake a placement at one of our partner schools to gain experience in a different key stage setting.
Students will be interviewed by the Head of School and the School Direct Lead followed by a written task, Year 6 Heads of School interview and a tour of the school led by our children.
We aim to let candidates know the outcome by the following working day.
Any students who are successful are encouraged to come and spend some time at the school before their official start date.
How school placements work
Redriff is a lead school and students will be placed here or at Galleywall, our sister school.
Students can be placed in any year group from Nursery to Year 6.
We are partnered with a number of schools which is where students can undertake their six week placement, however, we are open to students finding their own suitable placements.
Students will be paid on the Unqualified Teacher scale.
There are no fees associated with this course.
Financial support isn’t available for this course because it comes with a salary.

About the training provider
Redriff is a dynamic, vibrant and friendly school in a diverse and multicultural area. In 2011, OFSTED recognised the school as being an ‘outstanding’ school. We are looking for trainee teachers with passion and determination, who love working with children to join our team of dedicated staff.
Redriff provides an excellent training programme for the students on the schools direct course. We help with their professional development as well as their knowledge of primary education. Our welcoming, friendly staff are committed to supporting students in their training year and we have a wealth of expertise working within the school, to gain advice and support from.
We are a two-form entry school with positive, happy children, hardworking staff and supportive parents and governors. We are a fully inclusive school and have a resource base, The Boathouse, for children with autism.
Redriff has been a training school for a number of years and has trained many students successfully through the Schools Direct Programme. We ensure that we personalise the programme for each individual who trains with us to ensure they can become the best teacher they can be.
