Our courses last for one academic year, from September to July. As a trainee teacher, you’ll be based at one of our 48 Harris Federation academies, where you’ll learn to teach alongside expert classroom practitioners in an exciting, vibrant environment.
During the course you will spend one day a week at Core Training with your fellow trainees at Harris Initial Teacher Education, based at Harris Academy Bermondsey in South East London. The rest of your time is spent in your school placement.
The training sessions are facilitated by our expert practitioners who will model outstanding planning, teaching and assessment, to support your development as a teacher. You will have lots of opportunities to interact and learn from peers from across subjects and phases.

Assessment and Accreditation
The Harris School Direct programme leads to the award of QTS through Harris Initial Teacher Education (an accredited SCITT provider), with PGCE and Master’s Level Credits awarded in partnership with Kingston University.
As a trainee teacher, you will be assessed holistically against the HITE Curriculum, across the training year in both your school-based training and Core Training. By the end of the course, this will enable you to demonstrate that you have met the Teachers’ Standards as required for Qualified Teacher Status.
The elements that make up the holistic assessment include: Mentor reports; Evidence bundles; Final QTS panel presentation; Subject and curriculum knowledge; Attendance and punctuality; Maths and English proficiencies; and engagement and input in training.
The PGCE element of the programme is assessed by: Master’s level assignments; School experience.
Course arrangements and content may be subject to change in line with training partnerships with DfE requirements.
At your main placement academy, you will have your own personal mentor – an experienced teacher who will oversee the school-based element of your training year. They will support you, be a model of effective practice, observe your practice and meet with you weekly.
You will also benefit from a short second placement at different Harris academy. This means you can experience teaching in a contrasting school, to help you to develop your skills in a different context or age-range.

Our Primary courses cover the age range 3-11 and our Secondary courses cover 11-16. This means you will have experience across these age ranges. There are also opportunities for trainees to teach at Key Stage 5, if appropriate to their subject.
Requirements and eligibility
Applicants must have English and Maths GCSE at grade 4/C or above, or equivalent to train in secondary teaching. If you have completed an equivalent GCSE outside the UK, you will need to obtain NARIC certification.
Applicants should have a good honours degree (2.2 or above) and an appropriate level of subject knowledge in your chosen subject. If you have completed an equivalent degree outside the UK, you will need to obtain NARIC certification.
We’re looking for people who want to become outstanding teachers; people for whom teaching is a passion and who will be relentless in securing academic and aspirational progress for every child. You will need the ability to develop effective relationships with relevant stakeholders: children, parents and carers, colleagues and peers, as well as external agencies.
Further essential qualities are outstanding organisation and communication skills, a proactive approach, good interpersonal skills and a commitment to securing the best education for all children. You should also have determination and energy, high standards of literacy, numeracy and personal presentation and excellent subject knowledge.
Alongside meeting all of the eligibility criteria, and having original certificates of all your qualifications, you must pass the pre-programme checks. These will include an Enhanced DBS Check, Barred List and Prohibition Order checks, and a Medical Questionnaire to assess your fitness to work.
If you are eligible for a salaried training place the programme fees will be met by the academy.
Your salary will be calculated using the unqualified teachers’ pay scales and the location of your academy.

We offer year-long primary and secondary teacher training programmes to graduates and career changers joining the teaching profession through our Harris School Direct programme. We offer a strong support network and exciting environment in which to train to ensure that our trainee teachers leave the course feeling supported, confident and well-prepared. Our provision has been graded as Outstanding by OFSTED.
All our teacher training courses lead to QTS (Qualified Teacher Status), a PGCE (Post Graduate Certificate in Education) and 60 Master’s Level credits. We give you access to first class training, invaluable school and classroom practice and opportunities to learn on-the-job at a placement in one of our 48 academies across the Harris Federation. We work in partnership with Kingston University to deliver the PGCE element of our programme.
You will benefit from bespoke weekly Core Training with your fellow trainees; tailored subject-specific training days; personalised mentor and team support and a second placement in a contrasting school environment. You could earn a salary or receive a bursary, subject to eligibility, while you train.
About the accredited body
Harris Initial Teacher Education (Harris ITE) is the accredited training provider and has responsibility for recommending trainees, who successfully complete the programme, for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
If your application is successful, we will invite you to the first stage of our interview process, which is in two parts:
A 30-minute online interview with ITE Tutors where you will teach a 5-minute starter that you have planned in advance and a formal interview where you will answer some questions designed to assess your suitability to train to teach.
A 90-minute face-to-face interview where you will take part in a group discussion and complete two independent written tasks designed to assess your subject/phase knowledge and your understanding of professionalism;
We will also be assessing your English proficiencies and collecting your eligibility documents for verification.
Please be prepared to bring any ID documents or qualification certificates we may request from you.
If you have been successful at first interview, we will organise a visit to your potential placement school. When you apply to us, you are applying to the Harris Federation as a central provider, which means we can select your placement academy in discussion with you at first interview stage. We will work with you to review how your subject and phase choices, your location and preferences fit with one of our academies.
Following a successful second interview, we will make you a formal offer, which you will need to accept to secure your place on the course.
This will be followed by pre-programme checks including an Enhanced DBS Check, Barred List and Prohibition Order checks, and a Medical Questionnaire to assess your fitness to work.
Training with disabilities and other needs
Our training programme is open to everyone who meets the eligibility criteria. If you have a disability, we will make every reasonable adjustment to accommodate you throughout the recruitment process, as well as during the training programme, if you are offered a place.

To support those with a physical disability, whenever we build new schools within our Federation, we ensure they have full wheelchair access. However, when an existing school joins the network, we have to work with the existing buildings, and these can sometimes have limited accessibility. Our placement academies and core training facilities make full use of a range of technologies and specialist equipment.
The physical and mental health and wellbeing of our trainees is important to us. Our team are trained as Mental Health first aiders. We incorporate wellbeing sessions throughout our Core Training and offer regular, additional academic writing support as required.
