PGCE with QTS
A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) allows you to
teach in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. It’s also recognised internationally.
Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

About the course
Assessment and Accreditation
The Harris School Direct programme leads to the award of QTS through Harris Initial Teacher Education (an accredited SCITT provider), with PGCE and Masters Level Credits awarded in partnership with a London university.
You will be assessed through a professional portfolio, in which you build evidence of how the standards for the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) are being met. Evidence will include observations of your teaching, and written assignments demonstrating a clear understanding of the profession, phase and subject area.
Classroom experience will increase in each successive term of the programme, as your confidence and ability develops.
You will also be supported in undertaking two research assignments based on teaching and learning, facilitated by our partner university, to help you to develop a reflective, analytical approach to teaching and build critical research skills. These are equal to 60 Masters Level credits and will form part of your final QTS and PGCE award.

Funding and Fees
This is a salaried training programme. If you are eligible for a salaried training place the programme fees will be met by the academy.
In order to be considered for interview, you should complete a full application and consider your personal statement as being an important part of this process. If you are shortlisted, you will be asked to complete a written task relating to your chosen subject area or age phase and attend a formal selection day, as well as teach an introductory lesson.

How school placements work
You will learn on the job with a one-year main placement at one of our brilliant and thriving academies and will benefit from a contrasting experience on second placement. In addition to these placements, you will attend weekly practical training sessions at our central Bermondsey training centre which will enable you to develop your teaching skills, subject knowledge and great practice away from the classroom, as well as presenting opportunities for you to interact and network with other trainees from across the Federation.
If you are eligible for a salaried training place the programme fees will be met by the academy.
Your salary will be calculated using the unqualified teachers’ pay scales.
Financial support isn’t available for this course because it comes with a salary.
If you choose a course without a salary, you may be eligible for financial support while you study, including bursaries, scholarships and loans.
Applicants must have English and Maths GCSE at grade C or above, or equivalent to train in secondary teaching.
Applicants should have a good honours degree (2.2 or above) and an appropriate level of subject knowledge in your chosen subject.

About the training provider
We offer year-long primary and secondary teacher training programmes to graduates and career changers joining the teaching profession through our Harris School Direct programme, offering a strong support network and exciting environment in which to train. We have combined the best elements from a range of training routes to ensure that our beginner teachers leave the course feeling supported, confident and well-prepared.
All our teacher training courses lead to QTS (Qualified Teacher Status), a PGCE (Post Graduate Certificate of Education) and 60 Masters Level credits, giving you access to first class training, invaluable school and classroom practice and learning on the job at a placement in one of our 48+ academies.

To support those with a physical disability, whenever we build new schools within our Federation, we ensure they have full wheelchair access. Our placement academies and core training facilities make full use of a range of technologies and specialist equipment.
