A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

About the course

You will have the opportunity to become an outstanding student by the end of the year. You will learn from outstanding teachers and school staff. throughout the year, you will assessed through the university M Level modules and observation of your teaching. Your professional conduct will also be assessed throughout the year and feedback is sought from a range of professionals you work with.

You will normally be located in one of 2-5 schools for your placements. Training takes place at the university, the Alliance and some joint training with partner Alliances.

St George’s is ranked in the top 3% in the country.

School placements

The general structure is that you will be placed in a home school in term one, during which you will have a six week assessed teaching placement in the appropriate age range and class. This will be followed by a second placement in a partner school in the spring term, where you will have a second assessed teaching placement. You will return to your home school and have a third assessed placement during the summer term. Training continues throughout the year, both at the university and more regularly within the Alliance.

these are a minimum alongside a 2:1 / 2:2 Degree classification in exceptional circumstances a Third class degree will be accepted as long as extensive school experience has been done

You need commitment to, and a sense of excitement, and energy to work with children. You need to like children and want to be challenged by what they bring to you. No day is the same … We want you to be able to model the behaviours you expect from the children, including a sense of curiosity, awe and wonder ! Are you that person ? if so we want you ! the children need you and our country needs you !

About the training provider

We support and stretch our students to be the best they can be and provide a one to one package with a ‘Team around You’ approach. Our training programme covers a core that works in partnership with the university. It also gives you the opportunity to be a little more intrigued by how to use NLP ( Neuro Linguistic Programmming ) to develop skills that will make you an even better practitioner in the classroom. We devise a programme of placements that sees you experience a very small rural primary school of 36 children to a large two form entry Church of England Academy. We have high quality mentors who have many years experience and continue to be outstanding practitioners. Our team around you works on a professional basis to ensure you are not alone and can face challenges together. We have access to many diverse professionals that you can strengthen your experiences as you work towards being an outstanding qualified teacher.

Interview process

You will be invited to interview at St George’s Academy. The interview will generally take between a morning and a whole day, during which you will be taken through a number of elements:

  • a presentation
  • a drop in session with children
  • a group task
  • a written reflection task
  • an individual interview
