Develop your teaching skills, and qualify as a secondary English teacher, with our highly regarded PGCE Secondary English course at the University of Reading and Trinity School.
This Postgraduate Certificate Education (PGCE) Secondary English course is consistently graded as good in Ofsted inspections, and will lead to the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), qualifying you to teach the 11-18 age group in secondary schools in England and Wales.
The course is a 10 month, full time course, consisting of time at University and in two different school placements.
Those taking the PGCE will spend more time in the University than those taking the QTS-only course. The PGCE will involve writing assignments that are designed to help trainees to plan their teaching effectively and imaginatively, and to evaluate their developing knowledge and skills, particularly in terms of the quality of learning achieved by pupils. Successful completion will result in 60 master’s-level credits.
On a Secondary PGCE course through the University of Reading you are required to carry out two placements - ensuring you receive a broad range of experiences.
Trinity is the main school placement for all of our courses and a second placement of 6 weeks after Christmas will take place in a school in West Berkshire or the surrounding area.
Most second school placements will be found locally and the placements are found with the individual needs of the trainee in mind.
You are required to have a good undergraduate honours degree (or equivalent from a university outside the UK) plus grade C or above in GCSE mathematics and English or equivalent.
You will receive a salary of £15,000-£17,000 in line with the unqualified teachers’ pay scale.
If you choose to take the PGCE route with assignments, you will be required to pay £1,540 (correct of October 2019)

About the training provider
The Trinity Partnership is a teacher training provider in West Berkshire. We offer primary and secondary School Direct places for both salaried and unsalaried trainees. Our teacher training courses are organised in conjunction with the University of Reading.
Trinity is the lead school in the partnership. We work with other schools, including our trust schools Fir Tree School and Speenhamland School. We also have training links with other schools in the area to provide flexibility for second placement opportunities and particular subject specialisms.
Training at the Trinity Partnership offers the chance to work in a growing trust, where students are treated as individuals. Staff in the Trinity Partnership are dedicated and ambitious, they have high expectations of the students in their care and the schools all boast excellent facilities. Staff work closely with the School Direct trainees to ensure that all make the progress they need in their training year. Shortlisted applicants will be invited for interview at one of our main partnership schools, usually within two to three weeks of application.
The interview process will include a written task and a virtual interview with a senior member of staff and the ITTCo.
If successful, you will be contacted by the University of Reading, who will invite you to an initial needs meeting and a formal offer will then be made through UCAS from the University.
