PGCE with QTS
A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.
It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Course summary
You will be based at the main school all year, with a placement of 6 weeks straight after Christmas.
The school will organise a timetable that gives you access to KS3-5 classes - your commitment to teaching will increase as you progress through the course. You will be assigned a mentor within your department who will work closely with you on a day-to-day basis, meeting formally with you once a week.
Alongside your lessons you will complete three assignments for the University of Winchester (for the additional PGCE part of the qualification). These are focused around behaviour management, curriculum and inclusion and diversity. You will spend 6 days throughout the year at Winchester for subject knowledge sessions with a specialist teacher, alongside fellow trainees from your own subject across the area. In addition to this you will have weekly professional learning sessions at school focusing on educational pedagogy that will support you both in the classroom and in completing your assignments. We generally keep Fridays free from lessons for training and assignment purposes.
The second placement school takes place in the first half of the spring term - we will work with you individually according to preferences. Winchester will allocate you a University mentor who will visit approximately once per half term to review progress - this will include a lesson observation and a look through your teaching files.
School placements
Your main school is called your ‘formative placement’. You will spend the majority of the year at your main school.
In January you will spend 6 weeks in another school - it is likely to include years 7 and 8 because Thomas Hardye is an Upper School and so KS3 experience is limited.
We will discuss your placement early on, and we are very happy to consider your own personal requests. We fully appreciate that many trainees are keen to attend schools close to home to minimise travel commitments. We have strong relationships with many local upper, secondary and middle schools.
Entry requirements
Qualifications needed
An undergraduate degree at class 2:2 or above, or equivalent.
Your degree subject should be in mathematics or a similar subject. Otherwise you’ll need to prove your subject knowledge in some other way.
Grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths, or equivalent qualification.
We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.
We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English or maths.
Personal qualities
You will be enthusiastic and passionate about your subject, and be able to convey this to others through a strong work ethic and the ability to form positive working relationships with others. You will be able to articulate clearly how your skills and qualities equip you for this role, and why you would like to train with us.
Other requirements
We would like you to have completed a minimum of 10 days work experience in schools (any phase) prior to starting your ITT programme - this does not have to be completed prior to applying.

About the training provider
The Wessex Teach ITT partnership is designed and led by outstanding school practitioners, giving our trainee teachers practical training, support and advice, combined with classroom experience in a range of schools.
As a training provider we are committed to the following:
Ensuring a comprehensive network of support for trainees – we recognise the challenges that our trainees face and we place great emphasis on support provided both within and outside of the classroom.
Offering high quality training and development sessions – our weekly training sessions are delivered by expert practitioners across a wide range of topics. We also run regular reflective sessions whereby trainees can share their experiences in a coaching environment.
Ensuring a rich experience for trainees across the age range with partner schools – we work closely with a large number of local schools across all phases in both mainstream and special schools.
Developing a culture of reflection and continuous development for sustained learning beyond the first year – our trainees benefit hugely from the wide range of CPD opportunities available to all staff, and they are very well prepared for their ECT induction.
Interview process
Well done - you have been invited for interview!!
The interview panel will include the subject leader/Head of Curriculum Area, ITEC and a representative from the University of Winchester ITE Partnership. The day will include:
- A tour of the school
- A short written task (30 minutes)
- Delivery of a lesson ‘episode’ (you will be given information prior to the day)
- Observations in the classroom
- A more formal interview
When invited to interview you will be asked to bring along some paperwork, including proof of address, proof of eligibility to work in the UK and examination certificates.
International candidates
You’ll need the right to study in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:
- are an Irish citizen
- have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
- have indefinite leave to remain in the UK
If you do not already have the right to study in the UK for the duration of this course, you may need to apply for a Student visa.
To do this, you’ll need to be sponsored by your training provider.
Before you apply for this course, contact us to check Student visa sponsorship is available. If it is, and you get a place on this course, we’ll help you apply for your visa.
Alternatively, check if you’re eligible for a different type of visa, such as a Graduate or Family visa, that allows you to train to be a teacher without being sponsored.

International qualifications
If your qualifications come from a non-UK institution, we may want to see a ‘statement of comparability’ from UK ENIC. This will show us how they compare to UK qualifications.
You can call Get Into Teaching on 0800 389 2500 for:
- guidance on the UK equivalents of your qualifications
- a free statement of comparability once you’ve submitted your application (if we ask you for this)
