A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

About the course

  • Train to teach in our outstanding schools and gain your PGCE with QTS Our school direct course requites you to spend 25 days at The University of Birmingham and the remainder of the school direct year in school with us.
  • You will receive facilitated sessions based on live observations around high quality teaching and learning as well as the full primary curriculum.
  • The observations of teaching and learning and the primary curriculum will be of outstanding teachers so you will learn from the very best.
  • There will be two assessed assignments across the school direct year.
  • You will have three teaching placements (teaching practices) that begin with observations, then build to team teaching then you delivering lessons yourself. You will have at least one placement in our school, the outstanding Manor Primary and the others in our local partners schools.
  • You will be given a University mentor and a school mentor to support your school direct journey.
  • Manor Primary is consistently one of the best performing schools in the country and has been for more than a decade.

School placements

Our schools are partner schools that are within 5 miles of our school and have a good or outstanding Ofsted judgement. They are schools we have worked with over a number of years and we are confident they provide outstanding support for trainees.

Your placements will be in key stage 1 and key stage 2 . Your first placement in the key stage of your choice and the final placement in the key stage of your choice.

Entry requirements

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree at class 2:2 or above, or equivalent.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English, maths and science, or equivalent qualification.

We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in science.

Fees and financial support

The course fees for UK students in 2022 to 2023 are £9,250.

On our School Direct teacher programme, you will be given in-depth experience in the classroom. You will complete a main placement in a Key Stage of your choice and a second placement in a contrasting school and Key Stage. You will also have the opportunity to complete enhanced placements

In addition, away from the classroom, you will receive practical training sessions from expert teachers and the team at Manor Teaching School. The University of Birmingham will also lead sessions to support your academic development.

About the accredited body

The University of Birmingham’s Initial Teacher Training Programme is rated as Outstanding by Ofsted. Ofsted view is that they provide “High quality training and .... outcomes for trainees are excellent”

We have a long standing established partnership that provides our students with an excellent route into teaching.

Interview process

The interview process will consist of a short presentation on the theme of “what makes an outstanding teacher” and then followed by a short interview with our school direct lead mentor and our School Direct Leader At interview we will give you a tour of our school so you can see the school in action.

You will only need to attend one interview.

International candidates

You’ll need the right to study in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:

  • are an Irish citizen
  • have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
  • have indefinite leave to remain in the UK

If you do not already have the right to study in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa. The main visa for fee-paying courses (those that you have to pay for) is the Student visa.

To apply for a Student visa, you’ll need to be sponsored by your training provider.

Sponsorship is not available for this course.

If you need a visa, filter your course search to find courses with visa sponsorship.

Alternatively, check if you’re eligible for a different type of visa, such as a Graduate or Family visa, that allows you to train to be a teacher without being sponsored.

Training with disabilities and other needs

Manor’s School Direct route into teaching is an inclusive pathway and provides any student with any disability or other needs with individual and bespoke support so that their disability is not a barrier to achieving their PGCE.

Any student with a disability is provided with a support plan that is reviewed monthly to ensure their individual needs are met.
