A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

About the course

You will spend an exciting first two weeks at Arthur Terry School for initial training. You will start to learn the theories of teaching, learning, lesson design and practising techniques to get you ready for your first school placement.

There are at least two contrasting schools over three placements. For one day per week you will come together with your fellow trainees for centre-based training at Arthur Terry School that emphasises subject-specific pedagogy. Sessions are delivered by outstanding practitioners across the partnership, many of whom are Masters-qualified.

Whilst some courses offer you only Qualified Teaching Status, ours will also provide you with a PGCE qualification (60 Masters level credits). We work with Birmingham City University, our strategic partner, delivering the PGCE qualification ‘in-house’. Trainees will be assessed on a combination of evidence gathered during the Teaching Experiences using an online portfolio and three PGCE assignments that focus on key areas of professional practice.

The aims of the programme are to produce highly skilled graduate teachers who:

are resilient; are committed to an ‘open classroom’ ethos where best practice is developed through observing, collaboration and ongoing professional development; have a deep level of understanding of teaching and learning; demonstrate a passion for both their subject and working with young people; exhibit professionalism in the workplace and the community at all times.

This will be achieved through: spending a large proportion of their time in the classroom; a focus on core teaching skills including cognitive science, behaviour management, subject knowledge, assessment and adapting for individual needs; working with current outstanding practitioners on a day to day basis.

We are looking to select trainees with outstanding potential with a commitment and enthusiasm for working with young people. The academic requirements set out by the Department for Education to enter the profession are: at least a grade C or 4 in GCSE English and mathematics and undergraduate Honours degree (at least a 2.2),

We are committed to supporting our trainees beyond their first year. As you continue your career we have a range of teaching and leadership programmes through the Arthur Terry Teaching School Hub, North Birmingham.

School placements

We work with a range of partner schools across North Birmingham, South Staffordshire and Warwickshire. Each week, during school placements you will be observed and have coaching dialogues with your Learning Coach prior to and following observed lessons. Learning Coaches are outstanding practitioners who will work closely with you to set weekly targets based upon recent training sessions and your individual needs. In addition, time is also spent in a Special School setting and in a Primary School.

An undergraduate degree at class 2:2 or above, or equivalent.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths, or equivalent qualification.

We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English or maths.

All applicants will be required to complete an enhanced DBS clearance.

Fees and financial support

The course fees for UK students in 2022 to 2023 are £9,250.

All successful applicants will be required to complete and enhanced Disclosure and Barring clearance for which a fee will be charged.

Interview process

We are looking for highly motivated people who are committed to working with the diverse range of young people in our schools. Successful trainees on our programme will need to be reflective, resilient and able to respond to positively to feedback. Trainees on our course will also need to be able to exhibit high levels of emotional intelligence and be real team players. Excellent subject knowledge is desirable but also the ability to deliver this in an engaging and creative way.

Our interview process involves: A twenty minute teaching activity delivered to a small group of children to assess the applicant’s ability to engage with young people and enthuse them about the subject content; a group discussion to evaluate the applicant’s awareness of educational issues and the safeguarding of children; an evaluation of the applicant’s literacy and numeracy skills and a subject knowledge task. Those who are successful in the first stage continue to an individual professional discussion exploring the rationale for wanting to become a teacher and their suitability to enter the profession.

International students

We cannot sponsor visas. You’ll need to get the right visa or status to study in the UK.

You do not need a visa if you already have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, or if you’re an Irish citizen.

Candidates with qualifications from non-UK institutions may need to provide evidence of comparability by applying for a UK ENIC statement.
