You will spend an exciting first two weeks at Arthur Terry School for initial training. You will start to learn the theories of teaching, learning, lesson design and practising techniques to get you ready for your first school placement.
There are at least two contrasting schools over three placements. For one day per week you will come together with your fellow trainees for centre-based training at Arthur Terry School that emphasises subject-specific pedagogy. Sessions are delivered by outstanding practitioners across the partnership, many of whom are Masters-qualified.
Whilst some courses offer you only Qualified Teaching Status, ours will also provide you with a PGCE qualification (60 Masters level credits). We work with Birmingham City University, delivering the PGCE qualification ‘in-house’. Trainees will be assessed on a combination of evidence gathered during the Teaching Experiences using an online portfolio and three PGCE assignments that focus on key areas of professional practice.
The aims of the programme are to produce highly skilled graduate teachers who:
- are resilient;
- are committed to an ‘open classroom’ ethos where best practice is developed through observing, collaboration and ongoing professional development;
- have a deep level of understanding of teaching and learning;
- demonstrate a passion for both their subject and working with young people;
- exhibit professionalism in the workplace and the community at all times.
This will be achieved through:
- spending a large proportion of your time in the classroom;
- a focus on core teaching skills including cognitive science, behaviour management, subject knowledge, assessment and adapting for individual needs;
- working with current outstanding practitioners on a day to day basis.
We are looking to select trainees with outstanding potential with a commitment and enthusiasm for working with young people. Many of our trainees go on to be employed within our partnership of schools. Our overall employment rate is consistently high.
