PGCE with QTS
A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.
It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

About the course
Durham SCITT primary trainees will be allocated a ‘home school’ but will also complete a second placement in one of the other primary partnership schools. On each placement you will be allocated a Mentor who will support and guide you through the school based training.
The centrally based training is delivered by highly skilled practitioners from our Partnership Schools as well as SCITT staff, producing highly reflective trainees with a very good understanding of how children learn. There is a strong emphasis on giving you the knowledge and understanding to secure pupils’ progress in the core subjects, English, Science and Mathematics. The course will also enable you to improve your knowledge and understanding of other subjects in the curriculum.
The training has been designed to reflect local and national priorities and covers a wide range of general professional subjects including Behaviour Management and Special Educational Needs.
All trainees must demonstrate that they can fully meet each of the Standards for Qualified Teacher Status by the end of the course. Trainees will be continually assessed through lesson observations and placement reports whilst on teaching placements, and through a series of 3 short assignments. Detailed portfolios of evidence are submitted 3 times during the year to demonstrate how trainees are meeting the Standards for Qualified Teacher Status. Following the first 2 submissions, trainees receive feedback on their progress.
The PGCE is accredited by University of Sunderland and assessed through 2 written assignments. The 2 PGCE training modules will be held at The Work Place in Newton Aycliffe.
If a trainee does not meet the Standards for Qualified Teacher Status, but has passed the 2 PGCE modules, the credits can still be used towards a MA programme.

About the training provider
By choosing to do your training at St Bede’s you will be immersed in school life from the outset, interacting with students and learning first hand from outstanding teachers. We provide an innovative initial teacher training programme which will develop all aspects of your teaching repertoire and thoroughly prepare you for your NQT year. You will practise a broad range of skills in a bespoke training programme that will aim to develop you into an outstanding practitioner from the outset. You will be allocated a subject mentor from our staff with vast experience to support you through the year. These outstanding classroom practitioners will introduce you to school life and help you to learn how to teach your subject and also provide you with regular feedback and guidance to improve. St Bede’s works closely with Durham SCITT (School Centre Initial Teacher Training). You will also complete a Primary placement and Placement B at a chosen Secondary School. By choosing to train with St Bede’s, you will be working with other enthusiastic and talented trainees as well as outstanding staff.
Interview process
The first thing we look at is your application form and your references to decide whether or not we should invite you for interview. It is, therefore, important to include all the relevant information on the form to help us make this decision.
If you are invited to interview and have a disability, please let the Course Administrator know in advance if there are any special arrangements that should be made for the interview process, for example large print copies of documentation, additional time for reading or wheelchair access to the interview rooms.
You will be sent information about a 30 minute subject specific teaching task and we will advise which year group and how many students. The interview panel will then ask you several questions to establish your motivation for wanting to teach in your chosen subject area and some administration questions. There will also be an opportunity for you to ask questions about the course. After the teaching task and formal interview, you will have a timed written and numeracy activity to complete.
The formal interview panel will be made up of the HT and Subject Leader. A representative from Durham SCITT may also be present.
International candidates
You’ll need the right to study in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:
- are an Irish citizen
- have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
- have indefinite leave to remain in the UK
If you do not already have the right to study in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa. The main visa for fee-paying courses (those that you have to pay for) is the Student visa.
To apply for a Student visa, you’ll need to be sponsored by your training provider.
Sponsorship is not available for this course.
If you need a visa, filter your course search to find courses with visa sponsorship.
Alternatively, check if you’re eligible for a different type of visa, such as a Graduate or Family visa, that allows you to train to be a teacher without being sponsored.
Find out more about training to teach in England.
International qualifications
If your qualifications come from a non-UK institution, we may want to see a ‘statement of comparability’ from UK ENIC. This will show us how they compare to UK qualifications.
You can call Get Into Teaching on 0800 389 2500 for:
- guidance on the UK equivalents of your qualifications
- a free statement of comparability once you’ve submitted your application (if we ask you for this)
Training with disabilities and other needs
St Bede’s Catholic School & Sixth Form College strives to ensure that their provision does not place applicants with declared disabilities at a disadvantage. We make anticipatory adjustments to promote positive equality of access for disabled applicants, including access to benefits, facilities and services. We provide as many opportunities as possible for applicants to identify any special arrangements they may require, for example when inviting them for interview and continue to provide this level of care throughout their journey with us. We also ensure timely risk assessments are carried out to meet the needs of the individual.
