PGCE with QTS
A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.
It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

About the course
At least 85% of the placement year will be spent in schools, in readiness for your first job. Schools have experienced mentors, and leaders take extra care when introducing trainees to the classrooms. Timetables and commitment are set in consultation with the trainee to ensure quality support provision at every step.
The expectation of teaching from the School Direct trainee increases gradually over the year from 0% to no more than 65% of a full time equivalent (FTE). In additional to the timetabled training programme, you will be offered bespoke professional and personal subject study support, where required.
There is a 6 week placement at a different school during the second half of the spring term. Also school experience will be given for primary/Post 16 and SEN.
School placements
The applicant will be interviewed at the school where they will spend most of their placement. The applicant’s choice of campus, and the distance to the school, will also be taken into consideration when deciding on the host school.
Trainees will have a 6 week second placement in a different school during the second half of the spring term.
Interview process
All applicants are interviewed at university. In addition, applicants are interviewed at a school within our Alliance.
The interview will consist of: Written skills test; 30 minute observed teaching lesson; Formal interview where feedback will be given from the observed lesson.
You will be advised in advance of the content required, and age of the relevant class.
The selection process involves our University partners, a member of staff from the school offering the placement, and a representative from Bishop Luffa.
The process is rigorous and thorough and designed to ensure the best possible match of applicant to the places available.
Financial support
You may also be eligible for a loan while you study – note that you’ll have to apply for undergraduate student finance.
Find out about financial support if you’re from outside the UK.
