About the course
Throughout this teacher training programme leading to QTS with optional PGCE, you will be supported in well-established Maths departments across our partnership by subject specific mentors and a robust Subject Knowledge Programme. You will learn the craft of teaching Maths in a secondary school and the importance and role of English as a core subject within the National Curriculum. Through our training, you will be guided on how to support learners in effective and engaging ways whilst sharing your passion for Maths. Teaching Maths is a varied and rewarding career and is a vital part of enabling young people to read, write and engage with a range of texts. We look forward to welcoming you.
On any teacher training course, there is no substitute for being in the classroom as this is where you will develop the skills and competencies to become an excellent teacher.
On a SCITT route, graduates such as yourself will quickly become immersed into the fabric and day-to-day working of the school. It will also provide you with high calibre weekly Professional Studies sessions, which equip you with up- to-date theoretical and practical knowledge of the underpinnings of education. You will meet with your fellow trainees on a weekly basis to give you the chance to share your experiences and reflect on your emerging teaching practice. Alongside this, the SCITT route will allow you to spend the majority of your time in the classroom.
The key elements of this course are:-
- Placed in a main school from September to July with a shorter second placement for 6 weeks in January
- Assessment of teaching practice through weekly formal observations from your either your mentor, other experienced colleagues, external consultant or SCITT Director
- Three formal assessment points through the year based on teaching practice and your quality of evidence against the Teachers' Standards
- Three written assignments throughout the year and support will be given on academic writing and evidence based research
- All professional studies training will take place in a Partner School in Surrey
*Opportunity for an optional PGCE with The University of Roehampton, which carries Master's level credits
We interview all shortlisted candidates by invitation. The interview will be conducted by the SCITT Director and a senior colleague from one of our partner schools.
The interview process is conducted over half a day and comprises the following elements:-
- 20 minute lesson observation
- Learner feedback from your lesson
- Internal literacy and numeracy tests
- Subject Knowledge audit
- Overview of the programme
Some of the key things that we will be judging include:
- The way in which you engage with young people in the classroom
- Communication skills
- Passion for your chosen subject
- Clear understanding of wider educational issues
- Awareness of subject knowledge that would need development
We are looking at your potential as a classroom practitioner.
How school placements work
Our partner schools are selected on the basis of their commitment to working with the partnership to train and support teachers through a school-based programme. Thamesmead SCITT is a partnership that is based on four principles of excellence that underpin all of the work that we do. Each of our partner schools has a Professional Tutor who oversees the quality of provision in each of their schools and who is also a member of the SCITT management board who lead the strategic vision of the SCITT.
All of our mentors are selected based on the quality of their teaching and by recommendation from their Professional Tutor.
- All partner schools are located within 20 miles of Thamesmead School
- Partnership consists of 14 partner schools
- All trainees will have two placements in contrasting settings; main placement from September to July with a second placement for five weeks in January
- Secondary programme covers 11-16 age range
You will received the level 1 unqualified teacher pay scale.
As a salaried trainees you will not be entitled to apply for a student loan.
Financial support isn’t available for this course because it comes with a salary.
If you choose a course without a salary, you may be eligible for financial support while you study, including bursaries, scholarships and loans.
- A degree awarded by a UK HEI (or recognised equivalent) preferably 2:2 or above
- A least a Grade C/4 in GCSE English and Mathematics (or recognised equivalent)
- Overseas qualifications must be checked for comparability by the National Academic Recognition Centre [www.naric.org.uk]
- Candidates without GCSE English, Mathematics or Science, if applicable, at Grade C/4 or above must complete an equivalency test
You will be required to process and continue to develop a range of inter and intra personal skills to enable you to work effectively within educational settings. You will need to be an effective team member, you must possess excellent communication skills both written and verbal and you must be resilient in order to meet the demands of the course.
You need to be organised and be able to meet deadlines both as part of the course and as part of your work as a teacher in school. Most importantly, you must demonstrate the highest possible level of professionalism throughout.

Thamesmead SCITT is an ITT provider based on principles of excellence that is highly regarded by Ofsted. We lead a partnership of schools in Surrey with a network of effective and committed Mentors, Professional Tutors and Headteachers.

Our programme will enable high-level graduates to engage with the academic and pastoral curriculum in their placement school in order to give them a rounded understanding of what it means to work in an educational setting. Training with disabilities and other needs
Thamesmead SCITT welcomes applications from all graduates, including those with disabilities, those from ethnic minority groups and those that can bring a wealth of life experience to the teaching profession as a mature graduate.
Our programme includes advice and guidance concerning mental health and well-being and the range of professionals involved in the partnership means that there is a wealth of experience and support should a trainee need it.
Previously we have supported trainees with a range of needs including mental health issues, dyslexia and autism all of whom have developed into successful teachers.
An on-line occupational health check will need to be completed, as part of the pre-employment induction process and any recommendations that are provided by occupational health would be reviewed to ensure that candidates have the correct support for their disability and/or their specific needs. Trainees with specific physical disabilities including hearing and visual impairments will be placed within schools who are best able to provide the relevant accessibility.
