A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

Course summary

Essex School Direct provides a very special, school based training experience in partnership with TES Institute who have a reputation for innovative on-line learning materials, especially in shortage subjects, with its Subject Knowledge Enhancement courses.

Our unsalaried School Direct programmes are accredited by the National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL) and they provide a blend of online learning and in-school experience leading to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and an option to add a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE).

The PGCE is accredited by our partner University and is subject to annual review.

Essex School Direct Primary training programmes are run through two Partnerships. The Passmores Cooperative Learning Community (PCLC) in Harlow and the Chelmsford Learning Partnership (CLP), a multi-academy trust based in Springfield, Chelmsford. The schools within both PCLC and CLP believe that teaching is an exciting, challenging and rewarding profession. Their vision is to offer the highest standard of education for all, both in the local communities and beyond.

In Harlow, our Primary training programme centres around several schools, including Purford Green Primary School, Potter Street Academy and The Downs Primary School. In Chelmsford, our training programme centres around Barnes Farm Infant School, Barnes Farm Junior School, The Beaulieu Park School, Perryfields Infant School and The Tyrrells School.

In addition to the benefits offered by all our School Direct programmes, our Primary with Maths progamme offers specific Maths tasks to develop an understanding of how to teach Maths effectively including:

  • Observing the teaching of Maths across all years in the Primary Phase
  • An understanding of the roles and responsibility of a Maths Subject Leader
  • Reflections on the pedagogy of Maths and how children learn
  • A critical understanding of the developments in the Maths Curriculum
  • Face to face sessions focusing on different areas of Maths, including Maths Mastery, Leading Maths in the Primary School, National Curriculum requirements, the planning of Maths and end of Key Stage expectations.

School placements

You will be trained in schools which have finely developed systems in place to nurture development of the whole teacher and equip the trainee teacher with the ‘tools of the trade’.

All primary trainees will need to train to teach the 5 - 11 age range, with a placement in both key stages across the year.

Each successful trainee is placed in a school for the majority of the placement and the training will be provided by expert practitioners.

Entry requirements

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree at class 2:2 or above, or equivalent.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English, maths and science, or equivalent qualification.

We will not consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English, maths or science.

In some cases, we may accept candidates who have equivalencies in GCSE Maths, English Language and Science (for primary ITT). We accept equivalencies from A Star and Birmingham City University.

You must have 2 references, and have DBS clearance from our provider.

Fees and financial support

The course fees for UK students in 2022 to 2023 are £8,625.

  • Fee for QTS only = £8625
  • Fee for PGCE with QTS = £9250

Financial support from the training provider

  • Tuition fee loan/living cost loan is through the Student Loans Company.
  • a bursary of £6000 for applicants with A level Maths grade B or above (or equivalent)
  • Primary with Maths SKE offered to applicants who qualify

About the training provider

At Essex School Direct, we believe that teaching is an exciting and rewarding profession.

Our Partnership is based at and managed by the Lead School, Davenant Foundation School, in Loughton, Essex, and recruits for 23 secondary and 8 primary schools in the West Essex, Harlow, Havering and Chelmsford areas. All of our Partner schools are judged ‘Outstanding’ or ‘Good’ by Ofsted. Our unique blended learning programme combines school based training, on-line learning materials, a network of experienced subject specialists to deliver pedagogy, subject knowledge and off-site visits to special schools, primary schools and Leading Teacher days.

All schools in our Partnership have a successful track record of working with trainee teachers and university PGCE providers. Each school provides trainees with a fully trained mentor, supported by a Pathway Tutor (subject specialist) from TES Institute who visits each half-term to monitor progress and to “Quality Assure” our programme. Our route has provided consistent employment for trainees within the Partnership on completion of their training. In the last 3 years, the vast majority of our trainees had been employed before the end of the course, almost all of these in the schools where they had trained.

Successful applicants gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and most choose to complete a PGCE.

We provide excellent role models from within the teaching staff and opportunities to observe ‘outstanding teaching’. Each school aspires to engender an ‘appetite for learning’ within its pupil community, both in the classroom and within the range of extra-curricular activities it provides.

Interview process

The partnership schools will take part in a shortlisting process for each subject on offer.

Following this, there will be an interview at a school, which will consist of:

  • An observation of a short teaching activity, which the applicant will be briefed on prior to the day of interview
  • Maths and English audits
  • A formal interview

Applicants who are successful at interview will be offered a conditional place, subject to the following being met:

  • Satisfactory references
  • Satisfactory medical assessment
  • Disclosure and Barring Service Check (DBS)
  • National and Local Terms & Conditions of Employment.

NB: other conditions may also apply, and the interview process may be subject to variation due to Covid-19.

International candidates

You’ll need the right to study in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:

  • are an Irish citizen
  • have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
  • have indefinite leave to remain in the UK

If you do not already have the right to study in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa. The main visa for fee-paying courses (those that you have to pay for) is the Student visa.

To apply for a Student visa, you’ll need to be sponsored by your training provider.

Sponsorship is not available for this course.
