About the course
The School Direct Programme is designed to ensure that the trainee has a diverse school based experience that allows them to develop their skills in school based settings. You will be placed in schools within the Teaching School Alliance for your main and second placements.
As part of the SD programme you will join a highly successful secondary PGCE course at a leading London university and have full access to the University’s facilities. During the PGCE you will work with national and international experts in secondary education and in the teaching of your subject, and draw on the results of research studies in education. Successfully completing all aspects of the course will gain you the award of Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) which also carries 60 M level credits that may be used towards a subsequent master’s degree. The course also leads to the award of QTS (Qualified Teacher Status).
School placements
For the majority of your time with us you will be in school for four days a week with a day spent at university. You will be assigned an experienced mentor in school who will support you by meeting with you weekly, by observing lessons, by drawing up a suitable timetable that will develop your skills and broaden your experience. You will be placed in a school within the Teaching School Alliance for your main placement. In addition to the main placement you will also be placed in a second school in the Spring term. This will enable you to experience a different environment and work with different pupils. We aim to ensure that student teachers have the opportunity to teach across the 11-18 range at some point within their two placements. You will have the opportunity to spend a day or a short placement at a special school to learn about behaviour management strategies with more challenging students.

About the training provider
As a Teaching School and Leading Edge School, Valentines High School places quality professional development at the centre of its work. We were among the first ten schools in London to be awarded the Pan London Quality Mark for CPD, achieving the highest ‘Gold’ Level for the quality of our work. We were also one of the first 100 Teaching Schools. Valentines is an “outstanding” school with GCSE results consistently in the top 5% of national schools for progress. We lead an alliance of high performing, welcoming and highly successful schools in East London, all of whom have considerable experience in developing the skills of trainee teachers across a range of initial teacher training programmes. Our partnership of schools comprises a range of primary and secondary schools including a faith school. They are conveniently located, which means trainees can engage with more than one school in the partnership. We provide a unique opportunity to experience a diverse and contrasting range of teaching and training experiences. We work with a range of leading London universities and all our School Direct programmes lead to PGCE qualifications.
Interview process
You will be interviewed by two members of the Valentines Teaching School team.
The interview process may include some or all of the following activities:
Subject knowledge activity
Delivery of a half hour teaching activity to students
Written task
Interview by panel
You may be asked to attend a follow up interview at the partner university
International candidates
You’ll need the right to study in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:
- are an Irish citizen
- have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
- have indefinite leave to remain in the UK
If you do not already have the right to study in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa. The main visa for fee-paying courses (those that you have to pay for) is the Student visa.
To apply for a Student visa, you’ll need to be sponsored by your training provider.
Sponsorship is not available for this course.
If you need a visa, filter your course search to find courses with visa sponsorship.
Alternatively, check if you’re eligible for a different type of visa, such as a Graduate or Family visa, that allows you to train to be a teacher without being sponsored.

International qualifications
If your qualifications come from a non-UK institution, we may want to see a ‘statement of comparability’ from UK ENIC. This will show us how they compare to UK qualifications.
You can call Get Into Teaching on 0800 389 2500 for:
- guidance on the UK equivalents of your qualifications
- a free statement of comparability once you’ve submitted your application (if we ask you for this)
Training with disabilities and other needs
We are an equal opportunities employer, and we seek to accommodate all needs. Please contact us if you would like to discuss arrangements.
