A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

About the course

The Education Learning Trust will place successful School Direct applicants into the schools that will be most able to meet their specific needs. Each trainee will be allocated a main school with a contrasting placement, supported by University sessions at the MMU Manchester campus. We will endeavor to make placements bespoke to the individual career aspirations of successful applicants.

You will be trained in a highly supportive and aspirational environment and will develop the rigour, professional knowledge, understanding and skills necessary for the delivery of creative, purposeful and challenging teaching and learning.

This is a yearlong school based training programme will lead to a Postgraduate Certification (PGCE) and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). It will embody a collaborative approach enabling trainees to connect with experienced school-based professionals, whilst also receiving guidance from The Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) education faculty and staff. The training will be delivered jointly by MMU and by expert teachers in the Trust schools.

School placements

You will be placed in school within our locality, gaining a wide range of experience from Year 7 to 11. You will receive your own trained mentor to guide you through the year as you explore effective teaching and learning, making a difference to the outcomes of all the children you teach.

There will be a contrasting placement in a second school, including an opportunity to look at Special Educational Needs. We will discuss your second placement school with you to ensure that you are prepared and are able to experience different contexts. .

Entry requirements

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree, or equivalent.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths, or equivalent qualification.

We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We will not consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test.

Fees and financial support

The course fees for UK students in 2022 to 2023 are £9,250.

The school direct tuition fees are £9,250 but will lead to a PGCE award with QTS status from a leading provider.

Financial support from the training provider

There are numerous bursary and scholarship funds available for potential applicants to apply for to help with the School Direct fees. More information on these can be found on the DfE website.

The Education Learning Trust is passionate about shaping the minds of the future. The Trust comprises of three primaries and two secondaries. The Lead schools for ITT are Gatley Primary and The Kingsway Secondary.

The ELT are at the forefront of school-led Initial Teacher Training and is uniquely placed to deliver innovative training opportunities. One of the most empowering routes into teaching is the School Direct route. It offers the opportunity to learn with and from a team of professionals in an inspirational school. Gatley School Direct trainees have an outstanding record since September 2014.

Gatley, The Kingway and their alliance partners, working together, have combined their expertise to continue to deliver the School Direct programme into 200-21. This will be the alliance’s 7th year of delivering its very successful School Direct Programme. The diverse representation of schools within the alliance offers a vast range of experiences giving trainees the opportunity to learn and excel.

Interview process

Applicants will be invited to interview at one of the Trust secondary schools. The interview process will comprise of a subject specific task, a small short teaching task and a panel interview with key colleagues from within the Trust schools. During the whole process we will also be looking numeracy and literacy skills of applicants.

International students

We cannot sponsor visas. You’ll need to get the right visa or status to study in the UK.

You do not need a visa if you already have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, or if you’re an Irish citizen.

Candidates with qualifications from non-UK institutions may need to provide evidence of comparability by applying for a UK ENIC statement.

Training with disabilities and other needs

We offer a wide range opportunities to learn about special educational needs and how to support children with needs.We give an opportunity to experience a special school as well as looking at special needs in mainstream. In line with the code of practice, you will learn how to support all pupils.
