About the course

Course Content You will follow a school based course that leads to QTS, working with experienced teachers and guided by a mentor throughout.

The course content is individually tailored to ensure comprehensive coverage of the Physics subject. You will initially carry out lesson observations and participate in team teaching sessions leading to opportunities for independent teaching.

Support on a 1-1 basis will be provided as well as in-house training sessions delivered by experienced school staff.

Your study includes participation in the distance learning resources on the eQ virtual learning environment (VLE) as well as attending training events run by e-Qualitas during the year usually in Central London.

The Virtual Learning Environment includes the following 6 modules:-

  • Lesson Planning
  • Behaviour Management
  • Assessment – of pupils’ learning
  • Meeting needs of different groups of pupils
  • Wider context of teaching and learning Physics
  • Subject teaching i.e. bringing everything together and how to teach Physics really effectively.

Your experience will be complemented by a placement of about 6 weeks in a different school within the Alliance, as well as other tailored and structured visits.

Assessment Your progress towards meeting the Teachers’ Standards is formally assessed at four points during the year:

  • At the start of the course
  • at the end of 10 working weeks
  • at the end of 20 working weeks
  • at the end of the training period

These assessments are carried out jointly by you as the student, by school staff, your mentor and eQ tutors. Your formal assignments are marked by eQ tutors.

You will have a placement at an alternative Key Stage

Interview process

You will be interviewed at the proposed lead school.

You will need to bring evidence of your academic qualifications


The course fees for 2021 to 2022 are as follows:

Financial support

You could be eligible for either:

  • a scholarship of £26,000
  • a bursary of £24,000

To qualify for a scholarship you’ll need a degree of 2:1 or above in Physics or a related subject. For a bursary you’ll need a 2:2 or above in any subject.

You can’t claim both a bursary and a scholarship - you can only claim one.

Course Entry requirements

  • An Honours degree at least a 2:2
  • You must have achieved a standard equivalent grade C in the GCSE examinations in English, Mathematics and a Science subject.If you do not meet the GCSE requirement, you can do an equivalence test.
  • We recognise the tests offered by Equivalence Testing

About the training provider

At the Catholic Teaching Schools Alliance we believe the best way to train to be a teacher is in the classroom supported, by a team of experts, trainers and mentors who will support you throughout your day to day experience.

We work with several Catholic and Non Catholic partner schools across the south east, in which students are able to train. Each area is supported by a main training hub as well as the overall support from the main teaching school (St Joseph’s Catholic Primary), to ensure students have access to a wealth of experience and tutelage from all over the south east of England.

Our hubs are based in Aldershot, Basingstoke,Bournemouth, Reading, Wokingham, Isle of Wight, Portsmouth and Southampton

The CTSA has a number of training programs available for potential teachers at both Primary and Secondary levels suitable for both Catholic and non-Catholic applicants. Students will be based in one of the Alliance schools most conveniently placed. Our Alliance schools can be found throughout Hampshire, Surrey, Berkshire and Dorset.
