A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

Course summary

Degree Requirements: A 2:2 or above is preferred, however we will consider applicants with a 3rd class degree on a case by case basis.

The course is designed to help you fulfil a wider teaching role (including that of pastoral care) within your chosen educational context. Throughout the course, we place particular emphasis on providing equal opportunities for all students working in a diverse, multi-ethnic society. This course will provide you with a PGCE at Masters level and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Working closely with Bradford specialist staff, both in placement schools, you will gain the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to be a newly qualified teacher.

A strength of the course is the way in which theory and practice are related as a result of extensive time spent working with children in at least two placement schools. At least 120 days are school-based with support provided by experienced school mentors.

The course builds upon the subject knowledge and independent study skills which, as a graduate, you will have already acquired. Our school based sessions are also concerned with the professional skills which all teachers need. Course tutors work closely with managers, mentors and teachers in our school to provide you with advice and support for the progressive development of your teaching expertise. Teaching methods A large proportion of your teaching and training will be in our school, delivered by both highly experienced, inspiring school teachers and leaders. School based sessions consist of lectures, seminars tutorials, micro-teaching environments and observations of teaching in school and, where relevant, workshop or lab work. This is very much a practical course, where you learn by doing.

Assessment is carried out across both placements against the Teaching Standards. Based largely in our school, you will have one other main assessed school placement. We offer our trainees a Key Stage 5 (A- level) enhancement. You will also have the opportunity to get experience of a primary school, alternative provision or special school.

You will work alongside experienced teachers and mentors, who will provide advice and support. You will be introduced to your new role in stages, beginning with observation and work with individual pupils, then with small groups, eventually leading to your work with full classes.

School placements

We carefully consider school placements for all of our trainees. We match strengths as well as support needs for students. All trainees will be placed in two contrasting secondary schools, ensuring students experience the cultural diversity the city offers.

Your training week initially involves 4 days a week in school and a day working on teaching pedagogy, helping you learn the skills to make you an effective teacher. During your training year you will visit a vast array of schools from our partnership in both Primary and Secondary sectors. We operate an A B A model for our students, where trainees start in their host school, then complete an 8 week contrasting placement, then return to their host school to complete the training year.

Entry requirements

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree, or equivalent.

Your degree subject should be in religious education or a similar subject. Otherwise you’ll need to prove your subject knowledge in some other way.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths, or equivalent qualification.

We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English or maths.

Teaching is a creative, dynamic profession which has space for innovative thinking, for people who can break free from what’s expected. Our school is clear that we want trainees to have a rapport with children, a passion for their subject, and to have the ambition to become excellent teachers. You will have a relentlessly positive outlook, show initiative and be good team player, ready to work hard in a challenging but wonderfully rewarding profession.

Other requirements

We want to make sure that you have made the right choice in training to be a teacher. You will, by the time of interview, have had at least ten days paid or voluntary work experience. Your experience doesn’t necessarily need to be in a single block of time or to be with the age phase you want to train in. If you are successful at interview stage, you will be made an offer of a training place subject to satisfactory enhanced DBS clearance.

Fees and financial support

The course fees for UK students in 2023 to 2024 are £9,250.

Interview process

All our trainees who are shortlisted for interview will be invited into our school. If you are asked for interview, we will provide more details about tasks you will be asked to complete.

All our interviews have the same elements:

  1. A classroom based exercise, where you will be observed interacting with children or young people.
  2. Written tasks which are designed to assess your written communication skills; your capacity to access higher level study; and for secondary applicants, subject knowledge.

International candidates

You’ll need the right to study in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:

  • are an Irish citizen
  • have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
  • have indefinite leave to remain in the UK

If you do not already have the right to study in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa. The main visa for fee-paying courses (those that you have to pay for) is the Student visa.
