A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

Course summary

Your training will lead to a recommendation for the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) by the Department for Education (DFE).The PGCE includes 60 credits at Master level, the equivalent of one third of an MA that you can add to subsequently. The course content has been developed in collaboration between the University and Partnership Schools so that you can explore issues raised in the University through your work with pupils in school. The University based programme comprises two main aspects: Professional Studies and Subject Studies. Professional Studies develops insights into general aspects of education essential for entrants to the teaching profession. Subject Studies enables you to study the teaching of your chosen subject. It includes: the nature of the subject in secondary school; it’s place in the National Curriculum; what and how it’s taught; how it is assessed; providing for young people with different backgrounds and abilities; teaching to the examination specification; and using ICT effectively. School experience is integrated into all aspects of the course, and you will work in schools throughout the year. Your work in school takes a variety of forms including observing experienced teachers, team teaching, working with small groups, taking responsibility for the learning of whole classes and getting involved in all aspects of school life. You will be well supported in school by a range of experienced and well-trained people including a subject and a professional mentor and University based tutors. You will be assigned a mentor in your training school who will support you on a daily basis. You will also be assigned a tutor from the university who will visit you once every half term. Your tutor will monitor your achievements, evaluate your progress and work with your mentor to ensure that the training programme is appropriate for your own individual needs. You will be assessed against the eight Teacher’s Standards, based on the evidence of your teaching, your wider contribution to school life and your ability to reflect on and evaluate these experiences. Assessment will be carried out in school and moderated by your University tutor. PGCE students will write three assignments. These are designed to deepen your reflection on your school experience in the light of educational research, and to develop your ability to research your own practice. As well as being assessed in their own right, the assignments will contribute evidence towards your assessments against the Teacher’s Standards.

School placements

During the training year you will have two placements. You will have a main placement school where you will be for the majority of the school year, and in addition there will be a second smaller placement of approximately 6 weeks. Your placement schools are selected through discussion with yourself and the partner schools to ensure that you are placed in the right training environment. These schools will be a short distance from one another as all of our partner schools are within a 25 minute drive of each other. Our Secondary schools will enable you to teach KS3, KS4 and KS5 students and comprise of comprehensive and grammar as well as single sex and mixed school settings. We have a total of 14 partner schools and this includes 5 Secondary schools.

Entry requirements

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree at class 2:2 or above, or equivalent.

Your degree subject should be in chemistry or a similar subject. Otherwise you’ll need to prove your subject knowledge in some other way.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths, or equivalent qualification.

We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English or maths.

Applicants will need to organise the equivalency tests directly.

The Burnham Teaching Partnership is comprised of grammar, secondary and primary schools in the Burnham locality. Burnham Grammar School leads this partnership of schools. Our schools offer a welcoming, supportive and rewarding place to train. We offer a comprehensive training package for our trainees and the opportunity to work in a truly diverse range of schools. We offer a wealth of experience and are committed to providing a tailor made training experience. Our partnership of schools, are all situated within a few miles of each other and provide a diversity of educational experiences. We will provide you with a subject specific mentor, with whom you will have allocated meetings on a weekly basis to discuss your progress. You will also be allocated to a pastoral mentor, with whom you can develop your pastoral care in preparation for your role as a form tutor. In addition to this we have a comprehensive training programme for all of our trainees and NQTs, this consists of a weekly training session presented by a variety of our teaching staff, whereby they deliver specific training in their particular area of expertise. We encourage you to share your individual interests and skills in our comprehensive range of extra-curricular activities and will provide opportunities for you to be involved with educational visits. Burnham Grammar School works collaboratively with it’s university partners to ensure that it’s trainees receive the best of what School-based and University-based training has to offer.

Interview process

The interview process will involve a number of activities including: Individual work Group discussions Individual presentations Written assessment These activities will enable you to talk about your experiences, show what you know about teaching in Secondary schools and will demonstrate your potential to be an excellent secondary school teacher. We are not looking for the finished product, but for people who are enthusiastic and eager to learn and who have the potential to become outstanding teachers. Tutors from the University of Reading may also be present at the interviews

International candidates

You’ll need the right to study in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:

  • are an Irish citizen
  • have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
  • have indefinite leave to remain in the UK

If you do not already have the right to study in the UK for the duration of this course, you may need to apply for a Student visa.
