PGCE with QTS
A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.
It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.
Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

About the course
Our primary schools offer a welcoming, supportive and rewarding place to come and train to become a professional teacher. We offer a comprehensive training package and the opportunity to work in a diverse range of schools. We offer a wealth of experience in training teachers and are committed to providing a tailor made training experience to ensure that you reach your full potential as teacher.
Our schools are all in close proximity to one another. There is the opportunity to train to teach Early years, Key stage 1 and 2. We have experienced, enthusiastic and supportive primary practitioners who have a background in teacher training.
We work collaboratively with the University of Reading,which has a long and highly successful experience of ITT. The University works closely with it’s Partnership schools, planning and delivering training programmes in collaboration: teaching is practice - as well as research-led.
Your training will lead to a recommendation for the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) .The PGCE includes 60 credits at Master level, the equivalent of one third of an MA that you can add to subsequently. School experience is integrated into all aspects of the course, and you will work in schools throughout the year. Your work in school takes a variety of forms including observing experienced teachers, team teaching, working with small groups, taking responsibility for the learning of whole classes and getting involved in all aspects of school life.
You will be assigned a mentor in your training school who will support you on a daily basis and co-ordinate your school based training. You will also be assigned a tutor from the university who will visit you once every half term. Your tutor will monitor your achievements, evaluate your progress and work with your mentor to ensure that the training programme is appropriate for your own individual needs.
You will have a personal tutor at the university who will monitor your well-being and be available for advice and support when necessary.
You will be assessed against the eight Teacher’s Standards, based on the evidence of your teaching, your wider contribution to school life and your ability to reflect on and evaluate these experiences. Assessment will be carried out in school and moderated by your University tutor.
PGCE students will write three assignments, these assignments will contribute evidence towards your assessments against the Teacher’s Standards.

During the training year you will have two placements. You will have a main placement school where you will be for the majority of the school year, and in addition there will be a second smaller placement of approximately 6 weeks.
Your placement schools are selected through discussion with yourself and the partner schools to ensure that you are placed in the right training environment.
These schools will be a short distance from one another as all of our partner schools are within a 25 minute drive of each other.
Our primary schools will enable you to teach Early years, KS1 and 2 students.
We have a total of 14 partner schools and this includes 9 primary schools.
The interview process will involve a number of activities including a formal interview, a short written activity and working with a small group of children. These activities will enable you to talk about your experiences, show what you know about primary teaching and demonstrate your potential to be an excellent primary teacher. We are not looking for the finished product but for people who are enthusiastic and eager to learn and who have the potential to become outstanding teachers. Tutors from the University of Reading may also be present at the interviews.
On the salaried route your employer will pay the training fees.
Trainees on School Direct (salaried) will be paid, as a minimum, on the lowest point of the unqualified teacher scale (As a guide currently £17,682 outside of London and £18,844 for schools in the London fringe area). Please note actual salary is at the Headteacher’s discretion.
Financial support isn’t available for this course because it comes with a salary.
If you choose a course without a salary, you may be eligible for financial support while you study, including bursaries, scholarships and loans.
You must have at least a C (4-9) grade (or equivalent) for GCSE Maths, English and Science.
You must have a 1st, 2:1, or 2:2 honours degree in a subject that is closely related to the subject they intend to teach.
A Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) course can be considered for certain subjects where appropriate.
You will also need to demonstrate competence in Fundamental English and mathematics by the end of the course. This is a new DfE requirement.
All applicants are expected to have gained some experience in a state secondary school prior to interview.

About the training provider
The Burnham Teaching Partnership is comprised of grammar, secondary and primary schools in the Burnham locality. Burnham Grammar School leads this partnership of schools. Our schools offer a welcoming, supportive and rewarding place to train. We offer a comprehensive training package for our trainees and the opportunity to work in a truly diverse range of schools. We offer a wealth of experience and are committed to providing a tailor made training experience.
Our partnership of schools, are all situated within a few miles of each other and provide a diversity of educational experiences. We will provide you with a subject specific mentor, with whom you will have allocated meetings on a weekly basis to discuss your progress. You will also be allocated to a pastoral mentor, with whom you can develop your pastoral care in preparation for your role as a form tutor. In addition to this we have a comprehensive training programme for all of our trainees and NQTs, this consists of a weekly training session presented by a variety of our teaching staff, whereby they deliver specific training in their particular area of expertise. We encourage you to share your individual interests and skills in our comprehensive range of extra-curricular activities and will provide opportunities for you to be involved with educational visits.
