A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

About the course

This one-year programme will see you placed in one of our diverse schools as a member of the teaching staff. The majority of your time will be spent on a blended training programme.

You will benefit from bespoke one to one support from a member of the Atlas team and subject mentoring. You will get to know your fellow trainees in school via the group coaching and CPD workshops.

Interview process

This will determine your suitability to train to teach and assess your literacy and numeracy skills and subject knowledge.

The assessment process will include a short presentation, panel interview, group task and a short teaching episode.

How school placements work

You will complete a 6 week placement in a second contrasting school during the Spring term.


The course fees for UK students in 2021 to 2022 are £9,000

You may also be eligible for a loan while you study – note that you’ll have to apply for undergraduate student finance.

To be eligible to apply, you will need a degree (with Honours) from a UK Higher Education institution, or an equivalent qualification in any subject. You will also have solid A levels and GCSEs including C or above in GCSE maths, English and a science.

A 2:1 or above is preferable. However, we will be happy to consider your application if you have a 2:2 and can demonstrate strong academics in other areas i.e. A-levels and GCSEs and a real aptitude for teaching

The Haberdashers’ Aske’s Federation is a family of five primary schools and four secondary schools, all of which are located in the heart of their communities across the London boroughs of Southwark, Lewisham and Bexley.
