A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

Course summary

We keep our course content up to date with changes in local and national initiatives and legislation so that on course completion you will be confident that your working knowledge is based on current theory and practice.

The subject study/subject education strand builds on your existing expertise in mathematics and provides you with the opportunity to develop skills, knowledge and understanding of mathematics in the secondary school context. You will consider the learning and teaching strategies that are relevant to this specialist subject.

The subject education module is specifically related to teaching the specialist subject in school while the subject study module enables you to take your subject specialist studies to an increased depth. You can earn 20 masters-level credits through the assessment for the subject study module.

The education studies strand will give you a thorough understanding of the learning process itself, including an appreciation of individual differences. You will develop your practical competencies and analytical skills by studying the principles and practices of learning and teaching in both school and university settings. By the end of the course you will:

-refine your understanding of pedagogy, including an appreciation of current and emerging educational theories and debate

-learn how to use and adapt a range of teaching, learning, management and assessment strategies in order to meet the varying needs of learners understand how the progress and well-being of learners is affected by a range of influences and know how to take account of the principles of equality, inclusion and diversity.

Professional development is intrinsically linked to all key strands of the programme and is designed to enable you to evaluate critically and reflect on your learning in order to make improvements. You will be expected to gather and justify evidence of your achievements on a regular basis and develop and implement improvement plans.

Students use an e-portfolio to record their achievements, and under the guidance of tutors you will review this throughout the course. You will make full use of an action plan to support your professional development during placements. This makes up a significant part of the improvement planning process.

By the end of the course, you will have completed an e-portfolio, which you can use as evidence that you have met the Teachers’ Standards for the award of Qualified Teacher Status.

School placements

Our Full-time Course You will undertake two periods of Professional Practice in two contrasting schools over the academic year September to June.

Placement 1: End of September to February half term. Trainees benefit from a serial placement where the working week is divided between four days in school and a day of reflection and training at the University on Fridays. This ensures a weekly focus on theory and pedagogy as well as practice.

Placement 2: February Half term to Easter in a contrasting school or college with a return to your original placement school until May half term to complete the course. There are fewer University days to give you experience of working a 5 day school week.

Entry requirements

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree at class 2:2 or above, or equivalent.

Your degree subject should be in mathematics or a similar subject. Otherwise you’ll need to prove your subject knowledge in some other way.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths, or equivalent qualification.

We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English or maths.

Personal qualities

As a partnership we are looking for;

  • A passion for maths and interest and involvement beyond your degree
  • A strong knowledge and understanding of the study of maths, and a sound awareness of how the subject is taught within UK secondary schools
  • Effective communication skills and good organisational skills
  • Awareness of current educational developments and issues
  • Experience with young people and commitment to developing individuals
  • The ability to evaluate practice and address your weaknesses
  • Initiative, flexibility and responsiveness to change
  • A sense of responsibility and ability to work in a team.

Other requirements

Working with children: You must not be excluded from working with children, as a result of a criminal record or other reason. The Disclosure and Barring Service provides access to records held nationwide through its disclosure service. All trainees must obtain successful DBS clearance before starting an Initial Teacher Education programme.

  • Health requirements: All trainees must be screened for mental and physical fitness to teach by the University’s Occupational Health Department before admission to the programme.

Salary

The School Direct: Salaried route is employment-based and requires the trainee to be employed by a school as an unqualified teacher on a salary of approx. £16,000 whilst they train. Candidates get 60 days training and can be required to teach up to 80% of a teachers’ timetable. As an employee of a school, candidates have the same rights and responsibilities as any other teacher at that school. This route is therefore aimed at high-quality graduates with three or more years’ worth of career experience. No fee is payable as the £3,000 tuition charge is paid by schools on trainees’ behalf.

  • Each year we have a large selection of trainees in our schools, including PGCE, so you will not be alone but will benefit from the peer to peer support that is so important when learning new skills.

Interview process

Applicants who meet the entry requirements will be invited to a selection event either face to face or online via Zoom. Following a successful interview schools will then invite the candidate for a school interview.

As part of the interview process candidates can expect to;

Before the selection day

  • Listen to a video talk giving further information about the course
  • Complete some paperwork including our ‘Suitability for Teaching Declaration’. Both the above will be sent to you by email in your invitation to interview.

On the selection day

  • Have an individual online interview, via Zoom or face to face with a tutor and an experienced teacher from a partnership school
  • Deliver a short pre-prepared classroom type teaching task or presentation to the panel. You will receive details of the task in your invitation to interview.
  • Show the interview panel a form of photo ID on camera or in person for checking
  • Have an opportunity to ask the panel questions you may have about the course and your individual circumstances.

After the selection day

  • If we offer you a place on the course and you decide to accept we will need you to provide your original Undergraduate Degree, and GCSE Maths and English certificates

International candidates

You’ll need the right to work in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:

  • are an Irish citizen
  • have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
  • have indefinite leave to remain in the UK

If you do not already have the right to work in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa. The main visa for salaried courses is the Skilled Worker visa.

To apply for a Skilled Worker visa you need to be sponsored by your employer.

Sponsorship is not available for this course.

Alternatively, check if you’re eligible for a different type of visa, such as a Graduate or Family visa, that allows you to train to be a teacher without being sponsored.
