PGCE with QTS
A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) allows you to
teach in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. It’s also recognised internationally.
Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

About the course
You will spend two-thirds of your year teaching, under supervision, in schools. Our tutors and mentors will advise and support you throughout each placement. You will receive comprehensive feedback during this time which will enable you to see what you are doing well and where you might need to improve.
At Brighton we work in partnership with schools and colleges to provide a high quality programme of support, which is designed to provide a balance of theory and practice. You will benefit from undertaking two placements in two schools or colleges, with the opportunity to visit additional schools or colleges as part of the ‘Peer Observation’ programme.
At the School of Education we are excellently equipped with multimedia training materials, which you can use to enrich your learning experience and develop your ICT confidence and proficiency. Our multimedia suites are regularly updated to keep up with technological advancements in classroom teaching aids.
You will be required to attend two interviews one at the University and one at the school that you wish to apply for.

How school placements work
You will spend a minimum of 120 days on school-based activities, with your training shared between the university and the partner school.
Your school-based training will include observing teachers, working with individual pupils and groups of pupils, team teaching and independent teaching. Your training will also entail completing specific subject tasks and developing your knowledge of school policy and effective practices.
You will maintain a professional training portfolio and be supported to review your work critically and analytically as well as to set appropriately challenging targets. We will also develop an action plan with you to identify strengths, development needs and actions, so that your practice is continually developing.
Key aims of the school-based training:
-advance the development of your professional attributes, skills, knowledge and understanding
-provide practical and specific experiences that enable you to critically analyse your professional practice and take responsibility for your own professional development
-enable you to work collaboratively with colleagues in order to develop an understanding of the ways in which the attainment, development and well-being of all learners can be achieved with a unified support and teaching system
-provide opportunities that enable you to adopt a creative and -constructively critical approach towards your practice, supported by appropriate reading and research.
During your school-based training, university tutors, school mentors and teachers will support you and take shared responsibility for your professional development.
The School Direct: Salaried route is employment-based and requires the trainee to be employed by a school as an unqualified teacher on a salary of approx. £16,000 whilst they train. Candidates get 60 days training and can be required to teach up to 80% of a teachers’ timetable. As an employee of a school, candidates have the same rights and responsibilities as any other teacher at that school. This route is therefore aimed at high-quality graduates with three or more years’ worth of career experience. No fee is payable as the £3,000 tuition charge is paid by schools on trainees’ behalf.
Financial support isn’t available for this course because it comes with a salary.
If you choose a course without a salary, you may be eligible for financial support while you study, including bursaries, scholarships and loans.
Normally an honours degree, or equivalent qualification, in the subject specialism or a subject that is directly relevant.
GCSEs (minimum grade C or grade 4)
At least English language and mathematics. In-house equivalence tests are available for suitable candidates.

- Each year we have a large selection of trainees in our schools, including PGCE, so you will not be alone but will benefit from the peer to peer support that is so important when learning new skills.

The University of Brighton offer both School Direct Tuition and School Direct Salaried programmes in primary and secondary age phases.
You will be mentored by a successful teaching team with an outstanding national reputation and comprehensive research profile that informs course content.
