PGCE with QTS
A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.
It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.
Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

About the course
The aim of the course is to produce the highest calibre of MFL teachers, whose typical characteristics will include:
-strong levels of subject knowledge in two or more modern foreign languages. -an infectious enthusiasm for their subject and a determination to see young people attain the highest possible standards in MFL. -the skills required to create a positive MFL learning environment within which young people feel secure and best able to progress. -a commitment to inclusion and to promoting equal opportunities within schools and in the wider community. -a determination to continue their professional development throughout and beyond the course via reflection, self-evaluation, the sharing of good practice, experimentation and the reading of research methods and literature.

School placements
All routes and phases will complete two professional practices – this is a requirement for the award of QTS. Trainee teachers need a variety of experience in schools to enable them to meet all the Teachers’ Standards. They need to teach children and young people in their specified age range, from different backgrounds, as well as gaining experience of different approaches to teaching and to school organisation and management.
Professional Practice 1 is the period of time from the end of September to Christmas During Professional Practice 1, Trainees spend Monday to Thursday in school and Friday at University.
Professional Practice 2 is the period of time from January until May half term which includes the second school placement During Professional Practice 2, Trainees attend University on a fewer number of Fridays held at strategic points in the placement.
Entry requirements
Qualifications needed
Degree Normally an honours degree, or equivalent qualification, in the subject specialism or a subject that is directly relevant. GCSE (minimum grade C or grade 4) At least English language and maths. In-house equivalence tests are available for suitable candidates.

- The diversity within the partnership enables you as a trainees to engage with a wide variety of teaching methods and styles of learning.
- Each year we have a large selection of trainees in our schools, including PGCE, so you will not be alone but will benefit from the peer to peer support that is so important when learning new skills.
About the accredited body
University of Sussex tutors work with us to provide high quality inputs on how to teach and assess your chosen secondary subject or across the curriculum in primary schools. The University also provides a comprehensive programme of Professional Studies which complements the school-based training offered across our partnership.
Interview process
You will be required to attend two interviews one at the University and one at the school that you wish to apply for. Please be aware that all University interviews will take place online. School interviews will be dependent on individual Covid-19 Health & Safety procedures.
