Course summary

Please visit the Coventry University website for details of the course. www.coventry.ac.uk/apprenticeships/employers-area/education/postgraduate-teaching-apprenticeship

As the majority of your training will be delivered online, you will not be required to regularly be away from school to attend university lectures. In school, you will put into practice straightaway the learning from online teaching, materials, webinars and live tutorials. You will be part of a cohort of fellow trainee teachers, with whom you will share experiences and learning online each week.

Your subject mentor and professional mentor in school will support and develop you into the best classroom practitioner you can be; you will observe lessons and gradually build up from a 50% to 80% teaching timetable. There is a clear focus on reflecting upon your practice to identify ways to further develop. Throughout the training year you will be formally observed, supported to teach and contribute to the wider context of the school. For example you will also have a tutor/mentor group.

As with all Apprenticeship programmes, you will also complete an end point assessment (EPA) after the course is completed, which is an opportunity for you to demonstrate the learning acquired throughout the course.

School placements

During your training year, you will spend the majority of your time in one school and later in the year you will spend a shorter time (6 weeks) in a second, complementary placement. This is to give you a contrasting experience of schools and an opportunity to work with different learners and different practitioners from different schools.

You will have experience of all key stages (Yr7-13), observing and/or leading lessons.

About the training provider

The Lion Alliance is committed to providing excellent training for teachers at every stage of their career from Initial Teacher Training through to developing school leaders. Our priority is to develop and support you to become the most effective practitioner you can be.

Training with us gives you access to a wide range of highly experienced professionals, all at different stages of their career, who will help in your journey to qualify and enter the teaching profession.

Our Alliance consists of a growing number of primary and secondary schools, located across Coventry and Warwickshire, meaning that we are able to offer you the opportunity to develop your practice and classroom craft in different schools, in different key phases and in different settings.

We offer exceptional support to all of our trainee teachers. Once qualified, training and support doesn’t stop there; we believe in the importance of Continuing Professional Development and use the expertise of colleagues within The Lion Alliance and strategic partners to deliver a range of CPD courses, career stage professional development, as well as bespoke training and CPD.

About the accredited body

Coventry University has a local and world renowned reputation as an institution of excellence. They have now begun to offer varied teacher training courses, which are an area of growth across the United Kingdom, and have already developed a strong programme of study in Initial Teacher Training.

Their programme is hugely flexible, with seminar content being delivered virtually. This means there is less time spent at the university and more time for trainees to listen, reflect and learn. They also offer several start dates throughout the academic year, again offering more flexibility.

Interview process

You will be asked to attend an individual interview with The Lion Alliance and your host school. You will be asked to deliver a short lesson followed by a series of interview questions. Your panel will consist of the Head of the Lion Alliance, the Headteacher from your chosen school and a subject representative from your chosen subject. Following the interview you may be asked to complete a literacy and numeracy test.

For more information about how to prepare please visit our website: www.thelionalliance.co.uk

If successful with the Lion Alliance, Coventry University may also ask to interview you in the following few days/weeks.

International candidates

You’ll need the right to work in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:

  • are an Irish citizen
  • have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
  • have indefinite leave to remain in the UK

If you do not already have the right to work in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa. The main visa for salaried courses is the Skilled Worker visa.

To apply for a Skilled Worker visa you need to be sponsored by your employer.

Sponsorship is not available for this course.

If you need a visa, filter your course search to find courses with visa sponsorship.

Alternatively, check if you’re eligible for a different type of visa, such as a Graduate or Family visa, that allows you to train to be a teacher without being sponsored.

International qualifications

If your qualifications come from a non-UK institution, we may want to see a ‘statement of comparability’ from UK ENIC. This will show us how they compare to UK qualifications.

You can call Get Into Teaching on 0800 389 2500 for:

  • guidance on the UK equivalents of your qualifications
  • a free statement of comparability once you’ve submitted your application (if we ask you for this)

Training with disabilities and other needs

The Lion Alliance welcomes applicants with disabilities. We collaborate with highly experienced professionals in each school who always ensure the training year is flexible and inclusive to all. We would welcome working alongside trainees in making necessary adjustments to ensure the day to day environment is as accessible as possible.
