About the course

Please visit the Coventry University website for details of the course. coventry.ac.uk

This course will develop you to teach your chosen subject to learners in a secondary school. You will spend five days a week in school . Your subject mentor and professional mentor in school will support and develop you into the best classroom practitioner you can be; you will observe lessons and gradually teach classes. There is a clear focus on reflecting upon your practice to identify ways to further develop. Throughout the training year you will be formally observed, supported to teach and contribute to the wider context of the school. For example you will also have a tutor/mentor group. In partnership with the University, we will assess your progress against the Teaching Standards and support you to meet these across the year. At University you will work online in subject groups and complete assignments as part of the course.

School placements

During your training year, you will spend the majority of your time in one school and later in the year you will spend a shorter time in a second, complementary placement. This is to give you a contrasting experience of schools and an opportunity to work with different learners and different practitioners from different schools. Coventry University also requires that trainees experience Key Stage 5.

We have several Secondary and Primary school partners in our Alliance and are able to offer you the opportunity to really consider the school in which you’d like to spend your training year. On application you will of course select your preferred school and although these placements are subject to availability, the size of our Alliance means we can sometimes offer you a second school to consider if your first choice is full.

We offer exceptional support to all of our trainee teachers. Once qualified, training and support doesn’t stop there; we believe in the importance of Continuing Professional Development and use the expertise of colleagues within The Lion Alliance and strategic partners to deliver a range of CPD courses, career stage professional development, as well as bespoke training and CPD.

About the accredited body

Coventry University has a local and world renowned reputation as an institution of excellence. They have now begun to offer varied teacher training courses, which are an area of growth across the United Kingdom, and have already developed a strong programme of study in Initial Teacher Training.

Their programme is hugely flexible, with seminar content being delivered virtually. This means there is less time spent at the university and more time for trainees to listen, reflect and learn. They also offer several start dates throughout the academic year, again offering more flexibility.

Interview process

You will be asked to attend an individual, virtual interview with The Lion Alliance. This will last approximately 1 hour and during that time you will be asked to deliver a short lesson followed by a series of questions.

Your panel will consist of the Head of the Lion Alliance, the ITT Lead from your chosen school and a subject representative from your chosen school.

Following the interview you may be asked to complete a literacy and numeracy test. You may also be asked to visit your chosen school.

For more information about how to prepare please visit our website: thelionalliance.co.uk

If successful with the Lion Alliance, Coventry University will also ask to interview you in the following few days/weeks.

International students

We cannot sponsor visas. You’ll need to get the right visa or status to study in the UK.

You do not need a visa if you already have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, or if you’re an Irish citizen.

Candidates with qualifications from non-UK institutions may need to provide evidence of comparability by applying for a UK ENIC statement.

Training with disabilities and other needs

The Lion Alliance welcomes applicants with disabilities. We collaborate with highly experienced professionals in each school who always ensure the training year is flexible and inclusive to all. We would welcome working alongside trainees in making necessary adjustments to ensure the day to day environment is as accessible as possible.
