BTSA, and our partner schools across South Essex and Southend-on-Sea are known for providing high-quality in-school training. Our effective and supportive Schools Direct Programme for Business Studies trainees is designed to maximise your time in school, learning from skilled practitioners. You develop your knowledge and understanding of key education theories through our blended learning approach combining both face-to-face training and high-quality online learning materials and webinars. Online learning is provided with our strategic partner, TES Institute, with many sessions delivered by national experts. Face-to-face seminars give you a chance to explore how theories are applied in your own schools and learn from the practice of others.
Throughout the programme, you will learn how to plan, teach and assess learning with the support of a highly skilled mentor and a highly qualified and experienced Pathway Tutor (an external layer of support from TES). Your Pathway Tutor will monitor your progress and provide you with regular feedback and guidance.
Each week, you follow our clear and well-resourced Training Plan which helps focus your study. In school, you are treated as a member of staff and gradually develop your teaching with the constant support of expert colleagues, who guide you in reflecting on your own practice. This includes dedicated time with your mentor to evaluate the impact of your training, the reasons for your successes and to identify clear targets for development linked to our programme of study. Your Pathway Tutor visits your school each half-term. They observe you teaching and provide bespoke feedback on what they have seen as well as the progress you have made with your online studies. Specific objectives will then be agreed with you to deliberately practise.
The advice and support offered ensures that we have a high success rate. We assess your progress throughout the course to build-up an overall picture of the teacher you are becoming. TES’s innovative online system gathers evidence over the year which avoids unnecessary workload on trainees. In addition to your school and Pathway Tutor observations, trainees complete a series of knowledge audits, two assignments and a series of reflections at the end of the course, focusing on the impact of your studies. Those opting for the PGCE have both assignments validated by the University of East London.
