A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

Our effective and supportive Schools Direct Programme for Computing trainees is designed to maximise your time in school, learning from skilled practitioners. You develop your knowledge and understanding of key education theories through our blended learning approach combining both face-to-face training and high-quality online learning materials and webinars. Online learning is provided with our strategic partner, TES Institute, with many sessions delivered by national experts. Face-to-face seminars give you a chance to explore how theories are applied in your own schools and learn from the practice of others.

Throughout the programme, you will learn how to plan, teach and assess learning with the support of a highly skilled mentor and a highly qualified and experienced Pathway Tutor (an external layer of support from TES). Your Pathway Tutor will monitor your progress and provide you with regular feedback and guidance.

Each week, you follow our clear and well-resourced Training Plan which helps focus your study. In school, you are treated as a member of staff and gradually develop your teaching with the constant support of expert colleagues, who guide you in reflecting on your own practice. This includes dedicated time with your mentor to evaluate the impact of your training, the reasons for your successes and to identify clear targets for development linked to our programme of study. Your Pathway Tutor visits your school each half-term. They observe you teaching and provide bespoke feedback on what they have seen as well as the progress you have made with your online studies. Specific objectives will then be agreed with you to deliberately practise.

The advice and support offered ensures that we have a high success rate. We assess your progress throughout the course to build-up an overall picture of the teacher you are becoming. TES’s innovative online system gathers evidence over the year which avoids unnecessary workload on trainees. In addition to your school and Pathway Tutor observations, trainees complete a series of knowledge audits, two assignments and a series of reflections at the end of the course, focusing on the impact of your studies. Those opting for the PGCE have both assignments validated by the University of East London.

Below we have listed all partnership schools that could potentially offer to host trainees in this subject. Once your application has been received, we will contact you to see if you have a preferred host school and will endeavour to see if this is possible. Each school does however, have limited capacity in each subject area, and circumstances in departments can change.

If selected for interview, up to three of our partner schools could be present. If you are successful, and more than one school is interested in hosting, you will have the opportunity to visit each school to meet the staff and see the school in action. It’s important to us that you find the right training environment, where you feel you will be best supported. Once you have visited each school, you make the choice as to which school you would like to train at.

Your main placement will be in your host school from the start of September to the beginning of July with a second placement in a contrasting school from January to February half term. You will also have a two day visit to a school at the key stage below or above that in which you are training as well as a one day visit to Special educational needs school and a one day visit to a school with a high proportion of pupils with English as an additional language.

Entry requirements

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree at class 2:2 or above, or equivalent.

Your degree subject should be in computing or a similar subject. Otherwise you’ll need to prove your subject knowledge in some other way.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths, or equivalent qualification.

We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English or maths.

Personal qualities

Teachers are required to communicate with a wide range of people therefore it is essential that applicants can demonstrate excellent communication skills. Teaching is a challenging and demanding career both in terms of the training and the actual role. To ensure that we train teachers who go on to be successful, it is essential that applicants are fully committed to a career in teaching, understand exactly what such a career involves and have the necessary resilience . Having a sound grasp and understanding of your subject and being enthusiastic about working with young people is essential.

Other requirements

School experience is not essential and we welcome applications from all interested candidates.

If you are interested in getting classroom experience this could help you decide whether teaching is right for you and we will happily help you arrange this in one of our partner schools. On a school experience visit, during your time in a school, you will have the opportunity to:

  • talk with teachers about day to day school life
  • observe teaching and pastoral work
  • watch a range of lessons and age groups being taught

Fees and financial support

The course fees for UK students in 2023 to 2024 are £8,625.

Course fees for UK students in 2023 to 2024:

Depending on the subject that you wish to teach, you may be eligible to receive a tax-free ITT training bursary from the National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL). The amount of funding that you may receive, depends on the level of your degree qualification, the subject that you want to teach and you meeting all of the eligibility criteria. Trainees may choose to use their NCTL bursary to cover some or all of their tuition fees if available. Payment options may also be available on request to TES Institute but an additional administration fee may apply.

We are committed to attracting, training and developing the very best graduates so that the students within our area have the very best teachers and as a result exceed the progress targets expected of them. Trainees are supported by the finest classroom practitioners and develop their knowledge for teaching using high-quality resources developed by TES Institute. Our programme maximises time spent in the classroom and ensures that the face to face professional studies programme is focused on relevant and up to date research.

Interview process

Upon receiving your application, we will check that you meet all entry requirements and look at what skills, experiences and qualities you bring to the profession. It is important to present yourself accurately and in a professional manner. Your personal statement is your opportunity to say why you wish to teach and sell yourself to our schools.

If shortlisted, you will be invited to an online or face-2-face interview with up to three partner schools. The Interview will involve a teaching task followed by a series of standardised questions. Advance notice of the teaching task will be given.

If successful, you will need to complete Fundamental Maths and English assessments.

You will also be invited to visit each school interested in hosting you. It is important to us that you choose the training environment where you will be most comfortable and where you feel you will get the best support. Therefore, you make the final selection from the schools visited, rather than us allocating a school.

Following the interview, references will be verified and if necessary follow-up checks made. Some candidates may be asked to complete a Subject Knowledge Enhancement course which helps to develop your curriculum subject knowledge before starting in your school.

You’ll need the right to study in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:

  • have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
  • have indefinite leave to remain in the UK

If you do not already have the right to study in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa. The main visa for fee-paying courses (those that you have to pay for) is the Student visa.
