A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

Course summary

Our School Direct course consists of a variety of learning experiences, focused on practical training in teaching and learning related skills. This practical training is underpinned by the development of participant’s knowledge and understanding of education theories, ideas and concepts and by enhancing their awareness of current educational issues and developments.

This course will be delivered in partnership with The University of Manchester, who will award both Qualified Teacher Status and 60 Masters level credits as a PGCE on successful completion.

School placements

You will become part of your main placement school team from September. This is earlier than University led programmes. You will receive intensive support from our experienced team of teachers and mentors from the beginning of your placement. You will build your skills through observation, reflection, and attendance at both alliance training sessions and university led sessions. This will support you in building your skill set towards teaching whole class lessons, and then onto a significant timetable by the end of the year.

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree, or equivalent.

Your degree subject should be in Mathematics or a similar subject. Otherwise you’ll need to prove your subject knowledge in some other way.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths, or equivalent qualification.

We will not consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We will not consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test.

Our strongest applicants have undertaken some observation in a school and reflected on their experiences and the role of the teacher.

About the training provider

Loreto Grammar is an all-girls, high-achieving Catholic grammar school with academy status in Altrincham, in the borough of Trafford. Pupils are from the top 50% of the ability range in and beyond Trafford. The school serves pupils from the dioceses of Shrewsbury and Salford from a wide range of social backgrounds. The Professional Mentor has many years’ experience in leading the School Direct programme. The Subject Mentors work as a team, resulting in an excellent, well-organised and supportive programme, as is evidenced in previous trainees’ evaluations.

Interview process

All programmes include a panel interview during which we will assess your skills, knowledge, experience and passion.

The interview process takes place at our lead School Loreto Grammar School.

  • a personal interview designed to identify your suitability and commitment to teaching
  • you will teach a short lesson to a small group of pupils
  • a subject knowledge assessment
  • identity and qualification checks (please provide photographic ID, proof of address and copies of your academic qualifications)

All offers we make after interview will be conditional on satisfactory medical clearance; clearance through the Disclosure and Barring Service; validation of any declared qualification and the acquisition of any pending qualifications. Individual offers may have additional recommendations and you are advised to carefully read these.

International candidates

You’ll need the right to study in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:

  • are an Irish citizen
  • have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
  • have indefinite leave to remain in the UK

If you do not already have the right to study in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa. The main visa for fee-paying courses (those that you have to pay for) is the Student visa.

To apply for a Student visa, you’ll need to be sponsored by your training provider.

Sponsorship is not available for this course.
