PGCE with QTS
A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.
It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.
Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

About the course
This unsalaried teacher training programme leads to a recommendation for the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and PGCE comprising of 60 credits at Masters level.
The course will equip you to become an outstanding secondary school teacher. You will be encouraged to engage creatively and critically with a wide range of practices, debates, and current issues.
Within school, you will have a host mentor who will have undertaken a training programme to develop their mentoring skills, including coaching and classroom observation. Your school-based mentor will provide ongoing developmental feedback, and help you to practically apply your thinking and learning about Design and Technology pedagogy.
You will develop your own practice during the year, both through continued attention to your own specialism and by expanding your skills and experiences through a range of workshops.
Our programme is further enhanced by attendance at Bishop Grosseteste University for further subject-specific development and accreditation work.
School placements
We work with Secondary Schools across four different Local Authorities. Our schools are both 11-16 and 11-18 and you will have the opportunity to experience Special school settings as well.
You will become part of the department allowing you to train alongside experienced and specialist teachers. You will spend the majority of your course in one of our partner schools, supported by experienced and supportive staff, one of whom will be assigned as your host mentor. You will also undertake a second contrasting placement in another of our partner schools .
Throughout your year of study, you will explore all aspects of your subject. This includes those areas that are your strengths, as well as areas you may need to improve upon. You will study how pupils learn in your subject area, how you need to assess them and how to keep abreast of new developments within your subject. You will learn how to plan and deliver topics in ways that include all types of learners in meaningful ways.
You will spend two-thirds of the year in partner schools and other educational settings gaining rich and varied experiences designed to support meeting the standards for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Working with peers, tutors and school-based colleagues, you will develop your abilities to promote effective learning among 11-16 yearolds. You will also have opportunities to gain experience of the key stages before and after the ones in which you will qualify.

Interview process
Our recruitment process is shared across the partner schools within Josie Thirkell Institute of Education.
There is an initial selection process based on how applicants meet the qualifications and experience criteria. Should you pass this ‘initial sift’ successfully, then it is likely you will be called to interview.
Interviews take place in our partner schools and the panel may include representatives from Josie Thirkell and Senior Leaders from our partner schools.
The interview process is designed to enable you to show the extent to which you have the potential to meet the Teachers’ Standards. The day consists of four different tasks, a Reading and Writing Task, a Subject Specific Task, a Peer Teaching Activity and a formal interview.
During the interview, you will have the opportunity to meet and talk to staff and children and ask questions. Although please be aware if successful you may not be placed in the school in which the interviews are taking place. However, we do organise pre-visits to designated placement schools further into the process.
International candidates
You’ll need the right to study in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:
- are an Irish citizen
- have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
- have indefinite leave to remain in the UK
If you do not already have the right to study in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa. The main visa for fee-paying courses (those that you have to pay for) is the Student visa.
To apply for a Student visa, you’ll need to be sponsored by your training provider.
Sponsorship is not available for this course.
If you need a visa, filter your course search to find courses with visa sponsorship.
Alternatively, check if you’re eligible for a different type of visa, such as a Graduate or Family visa, that allows you to train to be a teacher without being sponsored.

International qualifications
If your qualifications come from a non-UK institution, we may want to see a ‘statement of comparability’ from UK ENIC. This will show us how they compare to UK qualifications.
You can call Get Into Teaching on 0800 389 2500 for:
- guidance on the UK equivalents of your qualifications
- a free statement of comparability once you’ve submitted your application (if we ask you for this)
Training with disabilities and other needs
Disability Support at interview: If you have a sensory or physical disability, dyslexia, a mental health or medical condition, please let us know if you need some support during the selection process. We recommend you contact both ourselves and University Admissions within three days of receiving an invite to interview so we can arrange (for example) extra time in order to complete reading or written tasks if required; a sign language interpreter; a note taker; materials in a different format; wheelchair access. We will try to accommodate your requests so that you can fully participate in the interview without any disadvantage.
Disability Access All training venues and schools must meet statutory requirements for access, but individual needs will be accommodated wherever possible.
