The HTTP school direct route is school-based training programme that will immerse you in a school environment from the very start. We are looking for motivated, passionate and dynamic potential teachers who are ready to share their love of subject and work with young people, developing their talents and making a positive impact from day one.
Havering is a successful outer London Borough and almost all local secondary schools are partners. Havering has a growing population and schools are expanding as a result: most of our trainees train in Havering and continue to work in Havering.
The HTTP programme has established an enviable reputation and is well regarded by head teachers: our long term employment figures are exceptionally strong. Our training sessions are provided by practising expert teachers from Partnership schools. They are thematically structured, blending pedagogy and practice, to equip trainees will the necessary skills and knowledge to become confident practitioners.
Weekly training sessions will be held in Havering schools so trainees can experience “Schools in Action” and see the connections between current pedagogy and practice. They guarantee regular contact with other trainees and spark friendships that will last throughout your career. In addition, fortnightly subject specific training led by our highly skilled team of Subject Leaders will develop subject specific pedagogy and inspire you to be an outstanding practitioner in your discipline.
At the start of the course, we ask you to complete a subject knowledge audit so we can personalise your subject training to the gaps in your curriculum knowledge. As resources vary from school to school, we will adapt subject specific training to ensure we develop your expertise beyond your placement so you are highly employable by the end of the course. We will encourage you to offer extra curricular experiences and to enjoy your subject from the start.
We provide a PGCE for all trainees based upon 4 written modules, a folder of evidence and feedback on classroom performance. This internationally recognised qualification will open doors so you can teach locally or travel the world.
The Havering Teacher Training Partnership will coordinate the recruitment process and support you to make the right decision for your training. If shortlisted, you will be invited to be interviewed by our Management team to determine whether you will make a suitable teacher. At the initial interview you will be asked to take a literacy test and complete a short presentation.
If successful, you will attend a second interview by a Partner School or Schools with an interest in employing a trainee teacher in your subject area where your subject knowledge will be assessed and where you will be expected to demonstrate your practical teaching skills.
Our interview process is rigorous, fair and thorough. As the school direct route is challenging, we work hard to achieve the best match of applicants to the available places in schools, which is why our close relationships with our partnership schools enables us to personalise your support.
Whilst we ask a lot from potential trainees; we ask more from our partner schools to support your training. Each school will provide a subject mentor and a Professional tutor, as well as a link course tutor. We also boast past trainees in all of our partner schools who can offer informal support and understanding along your journey.
How school placements work
On this route, you will be employed by one of our partner schools but will also benefit from half a term’s experience in a contrasting school. From the beginning, you will be treated like a member of staff and will attend staff meetings and training days. You will be in school from the first day of the school year to the last so you will feel part of the team from the outset and we will equip you with skills in lesson planning and behaviour management.
Schools will involve you with all aspects of what they offer: from trips, clubs, residentials, open days and celebration evenings - you will immersed in the school experience and have opportunities to make a difference to the lives of young learners.
You will be teaching pupils from age 11-16 ( KS3 and KS4) during the year in one of our 15 partner schools. The Partnership is an accredited ITT provider and we are currently working with the following schools: Abbs Cross Academy, Bower Park Academy, Harris Rainham, Campion School, The Coopers Company and Coburn School, The Drapers’ Academy, Emerson Park Academy, The Frances Bardsley Academy, Hall Mead School, Hornchurch High School, Marshalls Park Academy, Redden Court School, Royal Liberty School, The Sacred Heart of Mary Girls’ School and Sanders School.
The long established nature of the Partnership ensures you will be placed in a school and a department where HTTP can be confident you will thrive.
On this route, you will be contracted to your employing school and paid a minimum salary of point 1 on the unqualified teacher scale for outer London.
Being contracted to a school means that you will be expected to complete all the of responsibilities of a teacher from the very start of term including planning, marking and reporting. You will attend school meetings and events but will have no timetabled classes on a Tuesday, when you will be training with HTTP.
The course fees are £8,500 and are usually, but not always, paid by the employing school. Your first payment starts at the end of September and you are contracted until the end of July.
A high percentage of our school direct trainees are offered jobs with their placement school but you are able to apply for other jobs and change schools for your NQT year.
Financial support isn’t available for this course because it comes with a salary.
If you choose a course without a salary, you may be eligible for financial support while you study, including bursaries, scholarships and loans.
You will have a history of three year’s employment by the time you begin the course. This may or may not have been in an educational establishment.
You will be a graduate, preferably with a 1st or 2:1 but we will also consider applicants who have a 2:2 who can demonstrate an aptitude and a passion for teaching. Your degree should have at least 50% study in your chosen teaching subject. HTTP can arrange for you to follow a Subject Knowledge Enhancement Course before commencement of the training: a free of charge, on-line learning platform.
We are looking for the right blend of subject expertise and people skills to be able to impact upon the development of our young people.
We will expect you to speak clearly and coherently, and be comfortable talking to adults and students in a range of situations. You must be ready to accept constructive criticism to get the most from the experienced practitioners we will place you with.
Passion for your subject is necessary. We will embrace your passion, drive and energy to support you to grow your teacher identity and become an excellent practitioner.
You will have spent some time in an all-ability state secondary school observing or possibly in paid employment. Alternatively you may have worked with teenagers in a voluntary capacity. We understand that early applicants may still be in the process of finding a school to visit or looking to gain experience if at all possible - we may be able to help with this if short-listed for interview.

Training with disabilities and other needs
We welcome trainees with disabilities and other special needs. In recent years Havering schools have been modified in order to improve disabled access. Applicants who would benefit from disabled access should let us know in their application so that they can be considered for placements at the appropriate schools.
HTTP has a partnership with “Havering Mind” who provide us with training, advice and support. Where Trainees have experienced problems they have been helped with personalised support tailored to their specific needs.
A senior member of HTTP staff works closely alongside each trainee and small tutorial groups ensure personal attention. Training sessions are held weekly which guarantees regular contact with other training teachers. Past trainees have remarked upon the valuable personal support received during those challenging periods inevitable whilst training as a secondary school teacher.
Our most recent Ofsted Report identified as a key strength: ‘The high level of individual support, and adaption of the programme in response to individual needs.’
