About the course
School Direct Music at Simon Langton Girls’ Grammar School:
The Music School Direct teacher training programme at Simon Langton Girls’ Grammar School allows student teachers to train on the job in a supportive and well-organised environment. We pride ourselves on our personalised professional development programme which will enable you to develop your strengths as a leader in the classroom.
We work together with Christchurch University to offer Qualified Teacher Status with the option of an add-on PGCE qualification (Post Graduate Certificate of Education).
You will spend the majority of your time at Simon Langton Girls’ Grammar School. A contrasting secondary school placement will be organised for a 6 week period, a primary school for 5 days and you will spend 15 study days at Christchurch University.
School placements
Your main base school will be Simon Langton Girls’ Grammar School where you will spend the majority of your time training on the job.
A 6 week alternative school placement will be organised for you during your training year. This is to provide a contrast to your experience so far at Simon Langton Girls’ Grammar School. You will also complete 5 days in a primary school to aid your knowledge of the prior key stage and can also be organised by the school.
As we work with a range of schools in our partnership, it is very easy to organise a placement for you in a contrasting environment.

Fees and financial support
This fee is based on the figure for 2021-2022 and will be updated once the information for 2022-2023 has been released. Bursaries are available subject to eligibility.
About the training provider
Canterbury Teaching Alliance is working with Christchurch University to offer teacher training through the School Direct training programme. You can train as a secondary or primary teacher to gain QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) and there is an opportunity to complete a PGCE.
School Direct is a hands on, practical school based training programme which allows student teachers to work in their school from day 1. This ensures that you are able to work through an entire school year in your school and really feel part of the learning community.
We pride ourselves on offering superb support and training opportunities including individual subject and professional mentors, flexible time to manage workload, a range of schools for contrasting placements and high quality continued professional development.
We look forward to receiving your application.
Interview process
Potential applicants should apply through UCAS from October 2021.
Interviews will be held at Simon Langton Girls’ Grammar School for the post of School Direct Music.
International candidates
You’ll need the right to study in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:
- are an Irish citizen
- have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
- have indefinite leave to remain in the UK
If you do not already have the right to study in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa. The main visa for fee-paying courses (those that you have to pay for) is the Student visa.
To apply for a Student visa, you’ll need to be sponsored by your training provider.
Sponsorship is not available for this course.
If you need a visa, filter your course search to find courses with visa sponsorship.
Alternatively, check if you’re eligible for a different type of visa, such as a Graduate or Family visa, that allows you to train to be a teacher without being sponsored.

International qualifications
If your qualifications come from a non-UK institution, we may want to see a ‘statement of comparability’ from UK ENIC. This will show us how they compare to UK qualifications.
You can call Get Into Teaching on 0800 389 2500 for:
- guidance on the UK equivalents of your qualifications
- a free statement of comparability once you’ve submitted your application (if we ask you for this)
Training with disabilities and other needs
We welcome all aspiring student teachers and will support all individuals in their training needs.
