This teaching degree provides graduates with the knowledge, skills and experience necessary to teach Mathematics at secondary level. Time is spent in the University and in classroom placements, ensuring that by the end of the course, trainees are confident professionals ready to begin teaching in secondary schools.
This course has a practical emphasis where the teaching of Mathematics in the school classroom is clearly in evidence. The skills and methods of teaching Mathematics in an effective way are fully explored and are underpinned by research findings.
The course aims to develop confidence and competence in teaching Mathematics in the secondary age range, either 11-16 or 11-18. It provides trainees with an understanding of the importance of the school National Curriculum and current government initiatives. Students gain the ability to plan and evaluate teaching and learning situations and to practice classroom-teaching skills, broaden knowledge of available technologies and how they may be used in school mathematics and understand how children learn mathematics, including the difficulties they experience. Emphasis is given to the pedagogies of teaching and learning and how children acquire mathematical concepts.
The lead school organises your placements within the teaching alliance.
The School Direct course is a flexible approach to teacher training. The majority of your time will be spent in the school, training in the classroom and being supported by experienced teachers and mentors. On Monday’s you will also spend time studying at the University.
An undergraduate degree at class 2:2 or above, or equivalent.
Your degree subject should be in mathematics or a similar subject. Otherwise you’ll need to prove your subject knowledge in some other way.
Grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths, or equivalent qualification.
We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.
We will not consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test.
Following the interview, strong candidates who are not able to demonstrate graduate level knowledge in the subject they wish to teach may be offered a place on the course subject to successfully completing a Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) course in the subject prior to commencing your teacher-training year.
Fees and financial support
The course fees for UK students in 2023 to 2024 are £9,250.
Financial support from the training provider
As a School Direct trainee, you will be entitled to the same financial support as trainees on other postgraduate teacher training courses.
If you are a UK or EU trainee, you should be eligible for a student loan, maintenance loan and maintenance grant to cover the cost of your study and will only start paying the loans back when you start earning over £21,000 per annum.
You may be eligible to receive a training bursary, dependent on the subject you train for and a degree classification.
About the training provider
The Rutland and District Schools’ Federation are delighted to announce School Direct training opportunities in partnership with Nottingham Trent University.
The School Direct Training Programme is school-led initial teacher training, offering a training route to achieving qualified teacher status (QTS).
During the Secondary School Direct year, trainees will gain experience in Key Stages: 3 (years 7-9), 4 (years 10-11), and 5 (Years 12-13). It is a requirement to have taught a minimum of two key stages in your training year.
A requirement of the course is that trainees complete two days in a primary school. This provides an invaluable insight into the importance of transition from primary to secondary. Trainees will be allocated a tutor group to gain an understanding of the importance of the pastoral role in education.
The year is designed to help trainees build up to the equivalent teaching requirements of an Early Career Teacher (ECT). Trainees will have a mentor in both a base school and second placement. The mentor is there for day-to-day support, help with planning and suggestions for university tasks, and will conduct regular observations and provide structured feedback. Trainees will have a University Link Tutor who will conduct visits during the year and provide feedback and support.
Over the last 5 years, 100% of Rutland Teaching Alliance trainees* have been in employment contracts as NQTs by the end of the course . 98% of trainees starting the course gained QTS in the last 3 years (National 90%).

You will be invited to an interview with one of the Rutland Teaching Alliance partner schools as part of the selection process. At this interview, you will have an opportunity to take part in a number of school-based activities during a normal school day.
They will include:
An opportunity to meet with the subject Team Leader and other colleagues
Teach part of a lesson to a small group
You will also be invited to a second interview at Nottingham Trent University.
