Our School Direct route is a school-based approach to teacher training, allowing the highest quality graduates an opportunity to gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in a uniquely school-supported way. From day one of training with us, you will be integrated into the teaching staff of your placement school and be given the opportunity to make a significant contribution to the school in which you are based. You will gain teaching experience in both KS1 and KS2 and have focus days in secondary to better understand the transition from primary to secondary education.
This exciting way of training alongside outstanding practitioners in our schools will allow you to gain the knowledge, skills and professional attitudes that will allow you to embark on a personal journey towards being an excellent teacher and potential future leader. The majority of our trainees choose this school-based approach to their training due to the wealth of experience it can offer, the extensive hands-on practice and the continuous support available which runs alongside the training.
The feedback from our School Direct trainees is consistently excellent year on year and many of our trainees are appointed to work within the alliance after graduating. The practical element of your training will take place within one of our alliance schools and is then enhanced through regular attendance at the University, where you will enjoy full access to all of their facilities and expertise. Regular additional training sessions are available to our trainees through the RTSA training programme.
All our trainees are assigned an individual mentor, all of whom are carefully selected based on their level of expertise and capacity to support our trainees and they undertake rigorous training prior to commencing mentoring. You will also have the support of the School Direct Co-ordinator and your training will be closely monitored throughout by our Director of Teaching School.
This course leads to the Postgraduate Certificate in Education or the Professional Graduate Certificate in Education. This gives you up to 60 Masters level credits and a recommendation for QTS. A Masters qualification can then be completed by undertaking subsequent assessed research.
With a wide range of partner schools offering placements we are able to offer you a real diversity of experience and setting if you train with us. We do take into consideration both practical and geographical logistics when placing our trainees in individual schools.
You will spend all but the first half of the spring term in your main placement school. The second placement during the spring term gives you an opportunity to experience a different setting and school environment and gain experience in the other Key Stage at Primary. You will benefit from focus days at The Redhill Academy and the secondary school local to your placement school. All our trainees are given regular feedback on their teaching and formally observed a minimum of 13 times but our previous trainees would assure you that you will receive continuous observation and feedback. Weekly meetings with mentors ensure you are fully supported and progress is carefully monitored. The Director of Teaching School / RTSA School Direct co-ordinator and university tutors all quality assure the training process throughout and help assess the progress of every single trainee.
There is a genuine ethos of partnership across our alliance as we come together very regularly through our CPD and training programmes and networks. All RTSA staff, including our trainees, are able to access regular training sessions both in their own schools and through the RTSA, however we also have our own discrete School Direct Whole Cohort training sessions which allows our trainees to come together as a group on a regular basis to both further their training and to support each other.
A good UK honours degree or equivalent, preferably at a minimum 2:1 but strong candidates with a 2:2 will be considered.
Degree should be in a subject directly related to the Primary Curriculum.
GCSEs or equivalent (minimum grade 4) in English, Mathematics and Science.
We are looking for ambitious trainee teachers who are passionate and enthusiastic about their subject area and have a desire to share that with young people of all abilities. Ideally you will have already worked alongside young people (not necessarily in a paid capacity) and be able to demonstrate an ability to build positive relationships with children and colleagues. An awareness of current foci and issues in education would be beneficial. We are looking for trainee teachers who are willing to engage fully in every aspect of school life and relish the opportunities our training programme has to offer.
Work experience is no longer a prerequisite for application to School Direct training programmes, however any experience gained in schools will benefit both the interview process and training.
You will need to undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service check (formerly known as a CRB check) and provide information relating to Childcare Disqualification regulations.
Trainees will be paid on the unqualified teachers’ pay scale in agreement with the host school.

About the training provider
As an outstanding teaching school, heading an alliance around 30 schools, including both Primary and secondary schools, the Redhill Teaching School Alliance offers an opportunity to work with highly experienced professionals to train to teach.
As a trainee with us you will be fully integrated into the the school, in which you are placed and made to feel like a fully-fledged member of staff. You will be encouraged to engage in all aspects of school life, including being a co-tutor, attending parents’ evenings, staff meetings and CPD.
You will benefit from the expertise of specialist staff, mentoring and regular meetings with our ITT Co-ordinator. We have a bespoke CPD programme for alliance trainees and a large supportive cohort, who meet on a regular basis.
There are regular employment opportunities across the alliance for our successful trainees and many of our graduates go on to develop rewarding careers in teaching and leadership in our own and other schools. We have a rigorous, but supportive approach, which helps trainees apply effective teaching and learning methodology to their developing practice and pride ourselves on our excellent programme of training and support.
About the accredited body
We have a strong working partnership with Nottingham Trent University, a highly successful training provider, which enables us to offer our trainees not only QTS, but also a Postgraduate Certificate in Education. We meet regularly with the team at NTU to ensure our trainees’ needs are met in terms of both the practical and academic demands of the School Direct programme.
The Nottingham Trent University (NTU) Admissions Team conduct an initial eligibility check, to determine whether you meet the application criteria. Once this is complete, both the University and the lead school will then consider your application, and agree whether to invite you to interview.
Once selected for interview, you will be sent any subsequent information about the interview process by e-mail.
The interview process itself takes place at two separate assessment centres, one at NTU and one at the placement school. The ultimate decision whether to make an offer of a placement is made jointly by NTU and the Placement School, in conjunction with the Director of The Redhill Teaching School Alliance. The result of your application and interview will be communicated formally through the UCAS system by the University’s Admissions Team.
School based interviews may be conducted by the Placement School prior to the application process. The Placement School will manage the interview process for individual applicants to the Salaried School Direct route.
