About the course

Most of your training will take place ‘on the job’; in the classroom and at weekly Continuous Professional Development (CPD) training sessions run by highly skilled staff in the academy. You will also take part in whole-academy inset days and will attend Department and Team/Year Group meetings. You will be part of the team from day one!

Trainees attend lectures and seminars with the accredited provider typically one day a week, with the rest of the time spent in the academy.

You will be assigned an academy-based Subject Mentor and Professional Tutor. They will meet with you on a weekly basis to provide guidance and support.

Starting on a zero timetable, with the support of your Subject Mentor and Professional Tutor this will gradually increase over the academic year until you are eventually teaching around 75% of a full timetable.

A contrasting placement in a second setting is undertaken during the Spring term. This will provide a broader view of educational issues and experiences.

School placements

A contrasting placement at a different school will take place during the Spring term.

About the training provider

We are looking for future teachers from all walks of life who are as diverse and vibrant as the communities we serve. Join us and benefit from a tailored package of support and development from outstanding, experienced staff and tutors.

The Greenwood Academies Trust (GAT) is a Multi-Academy Trust covering Nottinghamshire, Leicester, Northamptonshire, Peterborough, Bedfordshire and the East Coast. We currently have 37 open academies, educating over 17,000 pupils aged 3 to 19. Working mainly in areas with high levels of socio-economic disadvantage, our mission is to inspire and to ensure that every pupil thrives, makes excellent progress and succeeds.

Alongside our accredited providers The Cambridge Partnership, Bishop Grosseteste University, Coventry University, Nottingham Trent University, and the University of Nottingham, we are offering a wide range of School Direct training places to start in September 2022. Based in one of our academies, you will study for a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) with Masters credits, and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

Since 2013 we have successfully trained more than 170 teachers through School Direct, with many former trainees now in positions of leadership. If you continue your teaching career with us we will provide ongoing support and Continuous Professional Development (CPD) specific to every stage of progression, through our Greenwood Learning Alliance.

Interview process

We want resilient, ambitious and enthusiastic people who are passionate about learning and have a desire to share that with young people of all abilities and backgrounds.

Our aim is to identify your aptitude and potential to meet the Teachers’ Standards at the highest level, and to meet the demands of the PGCE course outcomes. If invited for interview, you will be asked to evidence the following:

  • Subject knowledge. We will explore the level of that subject knowledge in relation to your potential to teach the full breadth of the curriculum and the subject specific examination specifications at the relevant Key Stages.

  • Research into the teaching profession. We will explore your understanding of professional training for entry into the teaching profession.

The selection process will involve interviews at both the academy and the accredited provider, where the provider is Nottingham Trent University, Bishop Grosseteste University or the University of Nottingham. Where The Cambridge Partnership is the accredited provider there will be one interview at the academy with a representative from the provider in attendance.

The academy-based selection process includes a formal interview, a short observed teaching session with a small group of pupils, a handwritten Literacy test, the opportunity to talk to staff and pupils, and a group task with other candidates.

Our accredited providers will be involved throughout and will have an equal say in the selection. It is a rigorous and thorough process, designed to get the best match of applicant to the places available.

International students

We can sponsor Student visas, but this is not guaranteed.

You do not need a visa if you already have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, or if you’re an Irish citizen.

Candidates with qualifications from non-UK institutions may need to provide evidence of comparability by applying for a UK ENIC statement.

Training with disabilities and other needs

We welcome applications from all, irrespective of gender, marital status, disability, race, age or sexual orientation.

If you have a disability as defined by the Equality Act 2010 please state this on your application. If invited to interview we will ask you if you require any reasonable adjustments to be made to help you access the selection process and, if offered a training place, to ensure that you aren’t substantially disadvantaged during your training year.
