It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

About the course
This high-quality programme is designed for entrants to the teaching profession who aspire to teach in special schools or to become Special Educational Needs Coordinators in mainstream schools.
This high-quality programme is designed for entrants to the teaching profession who aspire to teach in special schools or to become Special Educational Needs Coordinators in mainstream schools.
You will learn how to teach Maths in a way that motivates and helps children to enjoy the subject while enabling students to learn how to make mathematics meaningful, interesting and fun for the 11-16 age range. Our courses also include post 16 enhancement where you will develop your understanding of post 16 teaching.
Our specialist Maths teachers have years of experience and strategies to use in the classroom. They’ll work with you to plan your lessons to make sure you’re answering the BIG questions and using key words, so students become familiar with them and what is expected of them in response. You’ll also master lesson planning and learn how to manage a classroom plus other valuable skills to create the right classroom culture.
By the end of the programme, trainees will be equipped to teach in both mainstream and special schools, and will also have gained the foundations of special educational needs to consider training further for a special needs coordinator role, having had specific training on:
- SEN policy and legislation
- Inclusive practice and understanding the pupil as a learner
- Differentiation
- Behaviour management, including de-escalation techniques
- Communication, including the use of assistive technology to support learning and teaching
- Knowledge and experience of special school curricula
- Detailed understanding of barriers to learning
- New models of assessment
The programme will be delivered by outstanding practitioners from across our mainstream and special school partnership. Trainees will experience placements in both mainstream and special school settings. If you are currently working in a special school you may be able to have a placement with them but we also have placements in special schools from across our region.
School placements
We have a large partnership of schools, meaning our trainees have flexibility when it comes to placements. Our trainees can also benefit from the placements our partners can offer, which can vary from rural settings to the buzz of the city.
When allocating main placements, we consider trainee preferences, transport and location. Our dedicated team work hard to organise placements early, giving you as much time as possible to make arrangements.
All trainees undertake two main placements. The first placement runs from the first day of the Autumn Term until December. The second placement, in a contrasting school environment, runs from January until late June.
Trainees will also take part in mini placements across the year, which give trainees a unique opportunity to broaden their experience in a range of schools and contexts.
Interview process
For the foreseeable future, interviews will be held virtually on Microsoft Teams.
Preparation for the interview will include:
- Workload prioritisation activity
- Plan for a pupil activity
You will be given the opportunity to meet current trainees and course leaders.
When it is possible to access schools freely, we shall ask that you conduct a pupil activity and complete a written English test.
Fees
We are unable to sponsor Tier 2 visas.
Financial support
You could be eligible for either:
- a scholarship of £26,000
- a bursary of £24,000
To qualify for a scholarship you’ll need a degree of 2:1 or above in Mathematics or a related subject. For a bursary you’ll need a 2:2 or above in any subject.
You can’t claim both a bursary and a scholarship - you can only claim one.
Find out how to apply for a scholarship. You don’t need to apply for a bursary - if you’re eligible, you’ll automatically start receiving it once you begin your course. Find out how you’ll be paid.
You may also be eligible for a loan while you study – note that you’ll have to apply for undergraduate student finance.
Find out about financial support if you’re from outside the UK.
Financial support from the training provider
Many Trainees apply for student finance in order to pay their fees with a Tuition Fee Loan and have access to Maintenance Loan. Additional financial support may be available if you’re a parent or have a disability.
Red Kite offers a monthly payment schedule for those planning to self-finance.
