Course summary

(Ages 11 - 16)

The Dixons School Direct ITT curriculum aims to develop trainee teachers’ skills and knowledge in 6 core areas: behaviour and relationships, pedagogy, curriculum, assessment, inclusion and professional behaviours.1 The curriculum is intelligently sequenced and, through revisiting and reteaching key content, trainees are supported in developing strong mental models of teaching. Dixons trainees learn about Dixons specific approaches and also the wider educational landscape, supporting trainees to shape their teacher identity. Our ITT curriculum is regularly reviewed and updated so training is impactful, innovative and supportive.

Our curriculum is taught through: regular training at The Centre for Growth; Leeds Trinity University Professional Education Studies; Professional Studies in individual academies; expert teacher support and guidance in weekly mentor meetings and weekly Subject Knowledge and Applied Pedagogy (SKAP) sessions. A key feature of our training is deliberate practice and this helps trainees to bridge the gap between knowledge and application so trainees make faster progress and gain in confidence. All our sessions draw on high quality research and our curriculum is led and delivered by a range of expert teachers and leaders from across the Trust, Bradford Research School and Leeds Trinity University. Trainees are encouraged to adopt a critical lens when reviewing evidence and consider the rationale and implementation of different approaches. Trainees also experience impactful and evidence informed daily training whilst on placement.

To retain great teachers within Dixons Academies Trust and within the sector, we have incorporated the teaching of maximising resilience and self-regulation skills into our curriculum so trainees establish healthy habits at the very start of their teaching career. Diversity is also a defining feature of our curriculum; we want the next generation of teachers to understand their role in ensuring everyone belongs.

The knowledge and skills developed during the training year is consolidated and further developed through the Early Career Framework2. Many of our trainees remain within Dixons Academies Trust as Early Career Teachers so we are with our trainees at every step of their career.

We also offer fantastic employment opportunities and the majority of our trainees last year secured jobs within our Trust. Several of our Dixons Teacher Training alumni are now successful middle leaders. Finally, by training with us, you will begin a journey of continuous professional development and be supported at every step of your career.

School placements

Trainees will teach in two different and contrasting Dixons academies during the School Direct programme. Placements will be selected to meet the personal needs of individual trainees. Trainees will also have the opportunity to experience the other Dixons academies to enable them to fully immerse themselves in our unique Dixons culture.

We are a well-established multi-academy trust serving the communities of Bradford and Leeds. We have 6 secondary academies, 3 primaries, 2 all-through academies and one sixth form academy. Soon, we will have two schools in Liverpool and a further two are in the pipeline in Manchester.

We lead educational improvement in the region through our high performing academies which value diversity and maximise student achievement.

We are proud of providing excellent teacher training for more than 20 years.

Interview process

If shortlisted, you will be asked to:

  • Plan and talk through a 20 minute lesson
  • Undertake a subject knowledge test (the assessments are designed to initially assess your subject knowledge and your written communication)
  • Deliver a short presentation on a given topic as part of your formal interview

During the interview, the panel will consider your:

  • Commitment to making a difference in areas where it matters the most
  • Passion for teaching and love of your subject
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Capacity to establish effective relationships inside and outside the classroom
  • Suitability to train to teach and to meet the Teachers’ Standards by the end of training
  • Ability to reflect on feedback and act on it to improve
  • Resilience and determination

International candidates

You’ll need the right to study in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:

  • are an Irish citizen
  • have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
  • have indefinite leave to remain in the UK

If you do not already have the right to study in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa. The main visa for fee-paying courses (those that you have to pay for) is the Student visa.

To apply for a Student visa, you’ll need to be sponsored by your training provider.

Sponsorship is not available for this course.

If you need a visa, filter your course search to find courses with visa sponsorship.

Alternatively, check if you’re eligible for a different type of visa, such as a Graduate or Family visa, that allows you to train to be a teacher without being sponsored.

International qualifications

If your qualifications come from a non-UK institution, we may want to see a ‘statement of comparability’ from UK ENIC. This will show us how they compare to UK qualifications.

You can call Get Into Teaching on 0800 389 2500 for:

  • guidance on the UK equivalents of your qualifications
  • a free statement of comparability once you’ve submitted your application (if we ask you for this)

Training with disabilities and other needs

All our academies value diversity. We adhere to The Equality Act 2010 and Special Educational Needs and Disability Act 2001, which require teacher training providers to ensure they are not discriminating against applicants with disabilities or special educational needs (SEN).

We make suitable provision for disabled trainees, students and visitors on request. If invited to interview, any specific support required will be discussed with candidates. Please contact us for further or specific information.
