It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Course summary

QUALIFICATION

This salaried teacher apprenticeship W048 with a SEN school , leads to PGCE(M) QTS PGTA. The programme focusses on ages 5-11 but once qualified would not restrict the primary ages you could teach.

TEACHER APPRENTICESHIP

This is a nationally recognised, work-based route into teaching. It offers the postgraduate-level qualification with no tuition fees and the opportunity to earn while you learn. It is aimed primarily at candidates with a good understanding of what it means to work in a school and have built up some experience, perhaps as a teaching assistant or similar role.

PGCE(M) + QTS awarded by July 2023; PGTA end point assessment Autumn 2023

SPECIAL FEATURES

The programme is run by West London Teacher Training Alliance (WLTTA) in partnership with London Metropolitan University. We make prompt shortlisting decisions and liaise with you quickly if we need additional information.

WLTTA enables you to choose your employing host school at application. If later, there is a teaching vacancy in your school and they are keen to retain you as a qualified teacher, this can be done without the post being advertised. By becoming a WLTTA trainee, all our schools could employ you this way and if you needed it, we operate a pool.

Our aim is to produce exceptional teachers who could remain in alliance schools to continue their careers, taking advantage of further professional development, including the accredited Early Career induction programme.

THE TRAINING

You will register at the university and be employed by your chosen school. You will undertake off-the-job training, which will occupy 20% of your teaching time; this is split between face-to-face training at the University and independent training tasks in school.

You will receive an induction at the University. The course will then build on well-established and successful foundations by combining the expertise of the university’s course tutors who are experienced classroom practitioners and teacher trainers; with a dynamic curriculum designed to cater to your needs as a teacher apprentice.

You will be encouraged to reflect upon your own practice and to critically engage with current research, policy and pedagogy.

In the spring term you will gain experience in a contrasting (mainstream) school for approx. 6 weeks to add further depth to the training

With your school mentors you will feel supported as you progress and become ready to teach aiming for 40-60% by Christmas and building to 80% by the summer term.

With WLTTA, you select the main host school (or federation) at application. We then later arrange your second placement at another contrasting WLTTA school to provide greater depth to your training experience.

Entry requirements

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree at class 2:2 or above, or equivalent.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English, maths and science, or equivalent qualification.

We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English, maths or science.

We would not shortlist anyone with all three GCSEs outstanding.

We prioritise shortlisting of those with either none outstanding, or only one outstanding, over someone who still needs to take two equivalency tests.

Personal qualities

We want you to have passion and enthusiasm. We need trainees who can engage and inspire students to a love of learning, who are:

  • committed to championing their students;
  • open to learn about children’s physical/social/emotional/cognitive needs and how these can affect behaviour;
  • in good health with the ability to cope with stress. Teaching is incredibly rewarding, but it also requires an element of resilience!
  • professional and committed to equal opportunities;
  • able to communicate well in written/spoken English, with at least basic computer skills and commitment to developing these.
  • have a sense of humour and an ability to laugh at yourself.

Other requirements

Queensmill is a specialist school for autism. This programme provides significant specialist setting experience, to enhance your primary training. Successful candidates will have a passion for SEND young people and education and will have significant and sustained experience relevant to the context of the school. For all candidates it is advised to contact the school before application to discuss your suitability for the training programme. A realistic understanding of the role of a teacher is vital as is a level of maturity (irrespective of age) in order to operate as a responsible salaried member of staff.

Salary

You would be employed (at least initially) for one year by your chosen host school. The PGCE(M)QTS awards are made towards the end of that year.

You would be paid a salary in line with the ‘Non-Qualified Teacher Pay Range 2022-23’, normally at the Point 1 level. This government pay range is expected to be published in Sept. 2022.

As a guide, Point 1 on the Unqualified Teacher Pay Range for 2020-21 was:

  • £22,849 (for a school in inner London)
  • £21,518 (for a school in outer London)

Free Schools can set their own trainee salary levels, but usually follow the pay range.

Trainees on salaried programmes are not eligible for bursaries or student loans but you will have NO tuition fees to pay. Tuition fees are paid to the university from other sources.

If you are offered a post to remain at the school the following year, then the apprenticeship assessment meeting for the further award of Postgraduate Teacher Apprenticeship (PGTA) would take place there.

If you take up a job with another school in the second year, London Met will arrange for the PGTA final assessment meeting to take place in at your new school with no cost to that school or to you.

In either case the PGTA award follows an assessment meeting in the autumn term after you qualify as a teacher.

THE WEST LONDON TEACHER TRAINING ALLIANCE (WLTTA)

The West London Teacher Training Alliance represents a large group of 70 schools (nurseries, primaries, special needs, secondaries, sixth forms; faith and non-faith, maintained schools, independent schools and free schools) – who are all seeking to mentor and build a relationship with a trainee who aspires to work in their school.

Most of our schools are in Hammersmith & Fulham and Kensington & Chelsea, but we also have schools in Westminster, Richmond, Twickenham, Ealing, Hounslow, Hillingdon and Brent.

The WLTTA office is based at Sacred Heart High School, in Hammersmith.

OUR APPROACH TO TRAINEE RECRUITMENT

We pride ourselves in the support that we provide potential applicants and in the speed of our shortlisting.

We have a detailed website (do please look) wltta.org.uk and the WLTTA office is staffed full time with experts to talk to on the phone.

You choose the schools when you apply. If you perform well at interview but fail to get a place at your preferred school, we operate an internal referral system rather than rejecting you (see the interview section below).

We place significant emphasis on getting a good fit between trainee and school because we are all keenly focused on recruitment for qualified teachers in our alliance schools the following year.

This WLTTA programme is accredited by London Metropolitan University. The university takes pride in helping its students reach their goals and succeed in their careers.

Interview process

We enable you to select your preferred employing host school(s) at application and later through a referral process. We provide information about the schools to help you choose.

STAGE 1: SCHOOL INTERVIEW

Once shortlisted, we would invite you to an interview with your chosen school. In addition to the panel interview, you may be asked to prepare in advance to carry out a task in the classroom, e.g. to discuss an object of your choice with the pupils; or to teach a specified topic to a small group for a short time.

You would also be asked to complete a short literacy/numeracy test.

INTERNAL REFERRALS

If you are not selected as the preferred candidate, but have demonstrated potential, you can then choose another school or programme of ours and we would recommend you for shortlisting. We hope to fit good candidates with schools that they are happy with and where they can secure an offer.

There remains an advantage however in initially applying for a place at more than one of our schools, because such applications would be considered in parallel rather than sequentially.

STAGE 2: UNIVERSITY INTERVEW & DIAGNOSITIC ASSESSMENT

If you are selected from the school interview, we arrange for you to be invited to an online university interview and diagnostic assessment.

You will be asked to upload ID documents and relevant certificates if available. We can still make an offer subject to later verification of qualifications.

International candidates

You’ll need the right to work in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:

  • are an Irish citizen
  • have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
  • have indefinite leave to remain in the UK

If you do not already have the right to work in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa. The main visa for salaried courses is the Skilled Worker visa.

To apply for a Skilled Worker visa you need to be sponsored by your employer.

Sponsorship is not available for this course.

If you need a visa, filter your course search to find courses with visa sponsorship.

Alternatively, check if you’re eligible for a different type of visa, such as a Graduate or Family visa, that allows you to train to be a teacher without being sponsored.
