PGCE with QTS
A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.
It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.
Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

Course summary
This is a one year course in which you will have lectures at university and then two teaching practices at two different schools off site. Assessments are a mixture of written assignments set by the university and lesson observations and teaching practice assessment forms whilst at school. “UCL Institute of Education (IOE) is a global leader in teacher education. Their programmes are recognised by Ofsted as “outstanding” in very criterion across Primary and Secondary Education.” All UCL School Direct students have full access to UCL student support services and facilities. Seven Kings School is recognised by Ofsted as an Outstanding school and the Teaching Alliance consists of several outstanding schools. Seven Kings has an awarded “Cradle to Grave” programme of support for all teachers of all stages in their careers.
School placements
Candidates will be placed across the alliance within schools who have an excellent track record of support supporting students. The alliance covers 4 - 19 provision with an opportunity to visit special schools. The candidate will have two placements across the alliance spending approximately one term in each placement. They will start observing lessons and then taking small sections within the lessons before taking complete lessons and building up their timetables. About the training provider
Seven Kings Teaching Alliance has 25 schools who have great experience working with trainee teachers at different levels. Seven Kings Teaching School Alliance is proud to offer primary and secondary teacher tuition route and salaried training through School Direct, a school-based teacher training route. Trainees work alongside highly experienced classroom practitioners and have more of their training in school.
As a Teaching Alliance we have vast experience in Initial Teacher Training and are proud of our achievements in turning inexperienced trainees into outstanding teachers and leaders of the future. Many of our trainees now hold positions in middle and senior leadership roles. It is expected that trainees will go on to work within their host school or group of schools although there is no absolute guarantee of employment. Last year all of our salaried trainees received an offer of a job within our alliance.
We are proud of our awarded Cradle to Grave programme of training and the exciting programmes we offer for ITT across our schools’ networks.
Our School Direct training is delivered in partnership with the Institute of Education (University of London) and the University of East London.
Interview process
The candidate will be interviewed by teaching staff from alliance schools. They will be asked to prepare a lesson plan and discuss it as well as working with students and be interviewed. UCL carries out second interviews on the Tuition Fee Secondary route only.
International candidates
You’ll need the right to study in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:
- are an Irish citizen
- have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
- have indefinite leave to remain in the UK
If you do not already have the right to study in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa. The main visa for fee-paying courses (those that you have to pay for) is the Student visa.
To apply for a Student visa, you’ll need to be sponsored by your training provider.
Sponsorship is not available for this course.
If you need a visa, filter your course search to find courses with visa sponsorship.
Alternatively, check if you’re eligible for a different type of visa, such as a Graduate or Family visa, that allows you to train to be a teacher without being sponsored.

International qualifications
If your qualifications come from a non-UK institution, we may want to see a ‘statement of comparability’ from UK ENIC. This will show us how they compare to UK qualifications.
You can call Get Into Teaching on 0800 389 2500 for:
- guidance on the UK equivalents of your qualifications
- a free statement of comparability once you’ve submitted your application (if we ask you for this)
Training with disabilities and other needs
Seven Kings is equipped with lifts to support students with access. In the past we have supported trainees with access needs by timetabling them in more easily accessed rooms.
