Are you passionate about inspiring young people to learn about diverse topics from the human body to the natural world? Then our Biology School Direct course is for you.
This course will help you to develop the professional skills and knowledge you need to teach all aspects of science to pupils at least up to age 16, as well as biology to pupils aged up to 18. We are committed to creative approaches to teaching science, and you will be encouraged to develop resources during the programme. You are working with expert colleagues who are on hand to support you to develop your skills in planning, teaching and assessment.
The course begins with a stimulating mix of biology, chemistry and physics education. You will then focus fully on biology, allowing you to specialise in the teaching of this diverse and engaging subject at Key Stage 4.
You will acquire a critical understanding of current debates and issues relating to science education and, particularly biology, and we will guide and support you in developing your subject knowledge. You are expected to engage with reading and research in science education and to regularly reflect upon your own progress.
This ambitious school-led training programme has been designed in partnership with Middlesex University. We emphasise the importance of developing strong subject knowledge and an understanding of associated theory and pedagogy for teaching. Your training comprises an integration of centre-based training at Middlesex University with school-based training within the alliance schools. You will have an opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills required to demonstrate that you are meeting the Teachers’ Standards by the end of the training programme.
Training is designed to support trainee development in 5 core areas – behaviour management, pedagogy, curriculum, assessment and professional behaviours.
Trainees will be supported by mentors, university tutors and expert colleagues throughout their training to support their development.
In addition, you will be able to study for a postgraduate award, PGCert Teaching providing access to an ambitious curriculum for developing teachers.
