Mathematics teachers are in great demand and this course enables you to meet the national standards for the award of qualified teacher status. Combining theory and practice, you will comprehensively investigate the structure of the mathematics curriculum, considering numbers and algebra, shape, space and measures, and handling data. You will be encouraged to provide evidence of your own development in teaching and learning.
University-based sessions will enable you to reflect on teaching methods, education theories, ideas and concepts, and will enhance your awareness of current educational issues and developments. During your school practice, you will become involved in designing, producing, teaching and evaluating a range of materials currently used to support Mathematics in the secondary school. You will work with experienced mathematics teachers and will benefit from their expertise and understanding of strategies to obtain the best outcomes in teaching Mathematics at all Key Stages, enabling you to achieve QTS in secondary mathematics and prepare to teach one of the most important subjects at secondary school.
This ambitious school-led training programme has been designed in partnership with Middlesex University. We emphasise the importance of developing strong subject knowledge and an understanding of associated theory and pedagogy for teaching. Your training comprises an integration of centre-based training at Middlesex University with school-based training within the alliance schools. You will have an opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills required to demonstrate that you are meeting the Teachers’ Standards by the end of the training programme.
Training is designed to support trainee development in 5 core areas – behaviour management, pedagogy, curriculum, assessment and professional behaviours.
Trainees will be supported by mentors, university tutors and expert colleagues throughout their training to support their development.
In addition, you will be able to study for a postgraduate award, PGCert Teaching providing access to an ambitious curriculum for developing teachers.
