Throughout your year you will mostly be based in your host school, where you will experience life as a full-time member of teaching staff.
You will also undertake a 5 week long second placement at another school in the Spring Term.
Your main host school for your training will be The Minster School.
The Minster School is a Church of England academy of around 1,600 students aged from 7-18, with an ancestry tracing back over 1,000 years. The school has been graded ‘Outstanding’ since 2011 by Ofsted and in its most recent SIAMs reports, with recent GCSE and A level results placing us among the top schools regionally for progress. Our Music department is regularly placed in the top 1% of schools nationally for progress.
Our school is hosted in new state-of-the-art accommodation, including a theatre, recital hall, practice rooms and recording studio. Music sits at the heart of our school with numerous events ranging from formal concerts in the Minster Cathedral to productions with casts of 150+, to unplugged songwriters’ concerts. Previously a music specialist school, our legacy of classical and contemporary music continues to thrive and we have a very wide offer of musical experiences which students engage with.
The Minster School is proud to work collaboratively with hundreds of other schools through its work as a National Support School, Teaching School and Maths Hub. Our work as a Music Hub leads innovation in Music teaching at schools across the region.
We are also the Choir School for Southwell Minster with a Junior Department for younger choristers, who you will teach as part of your placement.
Our school ethos is ‘Succeeding Together’ through our Christian values of wisdom, optimism, resilience, kindness and service, and this runs through all of our work. We have one of the largest Sixth Forms in Nottinghamshire and offer over 30 A Level subjects, including Music and Music Technology A Level classes.
Our staff are experienced and enthusiastic about teaching, and you will be welcomed as a member of staff by the whole-school community throughout your School Direct year.
