A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.
It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.
Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

About the course
This course is designed for applicants who want to train to teach children aged 5-11 . Hillingdon SCITT trainees will train to teach in two consecutive Primary Key Stages (KS1 and KS2) .
During the initial teacher training year Hillingdon SCITT trainees will not only learn about pedagogy in general but they will also learn about phase specific pedagogy. Simultaneously trainees will also be given the opportunity to improve and expand their subject knowledge. Trainees will also experience some EYFS .
All trainees will spend 4 days a week in school. This will comprise of observing and learning from experienced colleagues, teaching, being observed and receiving feedback, as well as professional development. The 5th day will be a Professional Learning day with Hillingdon SCITT, which will be held at Bishop Ramsey CE School (which is where Hillingdon SCITT is based) and will be delivered by highly experienced and skilled practitioners. As part of their Professional Learning, trainees will undertake an Enquiry Based Pedagogy Project of their choice.
Trainees will have placements in 2 different Partner Schools. Trainees will be able to observe teaching and learning in other educational settings eg. Special Schools and Secondary Schools. Whilst on placement, the amount of lessons that a fee funded (unsalaried) trainee will be expected to teach is incremental according to each training phase. A teaching timetable will be created that is bespoke to each trainee based upon their prior experience and readiness to teach.
Throughout the year, trainees will have a designated Mentor/Coach supporting them as well as, Phase and Subject Leads from Hillingdon SCITT. To achieve QTS, all trainees at calendared intervals throughout the year will be assessed against their mastery of the ITE Curriculum as well as the Teachers’ Standards.
Trainees who meet requirements of the PGCert for Brunel University will have the opportunity to study for this alongside the QTS (QTS is accredited by Hillingdon SCITT). There will be 3 assignments for this during the training year.
The interview process, which is rigorous and thorough, will involve a full day spent at one of the Partner Schools, which is likely to be the main placement training school for the duration of the training year.
The recruitment day includes:
- Teaching a lesson or working with a group of students which will be group that they will be teaching)
- A short presentation (applicants will be given the information prior to observed by a qualified teacher (applicants will be given the information in advance about the content of the lesson, the duration and the age the interview to prepare for the presentation)
- Literacy and Numeracy tests (these are internal Hillingdon SCITT tests to assess the applicant’s fundamental skills in English and Maths)
- Interview (the panel will consist of representatives from Hillingdon SCITT and the Partner School)
- There may also be the opportunity to talk to staff and pupils and possibly a tour of the school.
How school placements work
During the training year, trainees will teach in 2 different Partner Schools. Trainees will spend the majority of the year in 1 Partner School (where they were interviewed). The 2nd placement is for the duration of 6 weeks, where trainees will be placed in a contrasting school.
Trainees who wish to specialise in teaching and learning children with special educational needs and disabilities can opt to have one of their placements in a Special School.
Most of the Partnership Schools are located within a few miles from the Lead School. Our Partner Schools have excellent public transport links including buses and the National Rail network (underground and overground). Full directions to the schools in the Partnership can be found on their websites. Central London is within easy reach.
Brunel University is located in Uxbridge, North-West London. The nearest underground station is Uxbridge, from which it is about 15 minutes’ walk from the Main Site Campus or a short bus ride.
Trainees will be paid on the Unqualified Teachers Pay Scale, which will be determined by each partner school.
Financial support isn’t available for this course because it comes with a salary.
If you choose a course without a salary, you may be eligible for financial support while you study, including bursaries, scholarships and loans.
To begin the teacher training year, the following qualifications are required:-
- You should be a graduate. (Applicants with a 2:2 or above from the UK will be eligible to take the PGCE. Applicants with a 3rd will only be eligible for the QTS.)
- You will need at least a Grade B in A-Level Mathematics (or equivalent)
You will need at least a Grade C or 4 in GCSE/equivalent in English, Maths and Science.
If you have completed your undergraduate degree or secondary schooling internationally, we will require a NARIC equivalence.

About the accredited body
Hillingdon SCITT, an Ofsted recognised Outstanding ITT Provider, located in North-West London, is the accrediting provider for QTS for all trainees who have applied to Bishop Ramsey and their Partner Schools.
Hillingdon SCITT has successfully trained 3 cohorts of Primary and Secondary teachers. Upon completion of the course Hillingdon SCITT trainees have been graded as Good or Outstanding towards the Teachers’ Standards. As a result, our trainees a highly employable and we have had 100% employment rate upon course completion.
