This course is a Primary Initial Teacher Training course whereby Trainees will specialise in teaching children between the ages of 5-11 (KS1 and KS2).
During the initial teacher training year Hillingdon SCITT Trainees will not only learn about pedagogy in general but they will also learn about subject specific pedagogy.
All Trainees will spend 4 days a week in school. This will comprise of teaching, being observed and receiving feedback, observing and learning from experienced colleagues as well as professional development. The 5th day will be a Professional Learning day with Hillingdon SCITT, which will be held at Bishop Ramsey CE School (which is where Hillingdon SCITT is based) and will be delivered by highly experienced and skilled practitioners. As part of their Professional Learning, Trainees will undertake an Enquiry Based Research Project of their choice (which will be the main task for QTS).
Trainees will experience teaching in 2 different Partner Schools. Trainees will also have the opportunity to observe teaching and learning in other educational settings eg. Special Schools, Pupil Referral Unit and Primary Schools. Whilst on placement, the amount of lessons that a School Direct Fee Funded (unsalaried) Trainee will be expected to teach is incremental according to each training phase. A teaching timetable will be created that is bespoke to each Trainee based upon their prior experience and readiness to teach.
Throughout the year, Trainees will have a designated Mentor/Coach supporting them as well as, Phase and Subject Leads from Hillingdon SCITT. In order to achieve QTS, all Trainees at calendared intervals throughout the year will be assessed against their mastery of Hillingdon SCITT’s Professional Learning Curriculum followed by the Teachers’ Standards at the end of the course.
During the training year, trainees will teach in 2 different Partner Schools. Trainees will spend the majority of the year in 1 Partner School (where they were interviewed). The 2nd placement is for the duration of 6 weeks, where trainees will be placed in a contrasting school.
Trainees who wish to specialise in teaching and learning children with special educational needs and disabilities can opt to have one of their placements in a Special School.
Most of the Partnership Schools are located within a few miles from the Lead School. Our Partner Schools have excellent public transport links including buses and the National Rail network (underground and overground). Full directions to the schools in the Partnership can be found on their websites. Central London is within easy reach.
An undergraduate degree, or equivalent. This should be an honours degree (Third or above), or equivalent.
Grade 4 (C) or above in English, maths and science, or equivalent qualification.
We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.
We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English, maths or science.
We are looking for ambitious applicants who are passionate, enthusiastic, committed and have a desire to share that with children and young people of all abilities.
The salaried route would be more suitable for candidates who have been in schools and worked with children. Therefore such candidates will be familiar with how teaching and learning takes place within schools.

The course provides a unique opportunity to experience a diverse and contrasting range of teaching and training experiences in at least two schools. Children and young people across the partnership are happy, friendly and well-behaved and are at the heart of everything we do.
The interview process, which is rigorous and thorough, will involve a full day spent at one of the Partner Schools, which is likely to be the main placement training school for the duration of the training year.
The recruitment day includes:
Teaching a lesson or working with a group of students which will be group that they will be teaching)
A short presentation (applicants will be given the information prior to observed by a qualified teacher (applicants will be given the information in advance about the content of the lesson, the duration and the age the interview to prepare for the presentation)
Literacy and Numeracy tests (these are internal Hillingdon SCITT tests to assess the applicant’s fundamental skills in English and Maths)
Interview (the panel will consist of representatives from Hillingdon SCITT and the Partner School)
There may also be the opportunity to talk to staff and pupils and possibly a tour of the school.
