Course summary

School Direct is a school-based teacher training programme. School Direct trainees spend the majority of the training year in placements within Delta Academies and also attend Leeds Beckett University for frequent days during the training year.

As a Delta Academies School Direct trainee, you will:

Be supported by outstanding teachers, have a school-based mentor and an academic tutor from the university who will be an expert specialist in the field. All those involved in your training are dedicated to your development towards becoming a high-quality reflective practitioner.

Gain a PGCE which includes qualified teacher status and can be used as the first third of a master’s degree (60 credits) if you wish to continue with this accredited professional development in the early part of your career.

Benefit from high-quality sessions with other trainees across Delta Academies Trust to develop your knowledge and application of effective strategies that underpin learning and achievement in the classroom.

Utilise outstanding, current teachers and school leaders to lead taught sessions, ensuring you learn from those who are current teachers and school leaders.

Benefit from high-quality sessions with other PGCE students at the university where research-informed practice and theoretical underpinning of classroom practice will be shared and critiqued.

Benefit from a dedicated School Direct team to offer support throughout the training year and beyond with many trainees remaining with Delta for their ECT year (Early Career Teacher).

Course fees for 2022 to 2023 are £9,250. You may be eligible for a student loan or bursary. Visit (https://getintoteaching.education.gov.uk/) for more information about funding your training.

School placements

During your training year, you will undertake placements in two contrasting schools with the majority of Secondary trainees spending most of their time in one host school with a short complementary placement after Christmas.

First placements are confirmed at or before the Delta School Direct Induction which, takes place towards the end of the Summer Term (late June / early July).

As Delta Academies Trust has academies based across Yorkshire and the Humber, we will always aim to try and place trainees in academies that are within a ‘reasonable travelling distance’ from where they live to cut down on commuting time. It cannot be guaranteed that placements will be in the closest school due to additional factors. For more information as to which academies are part of Delta Academies Trust, please visit our website.

Trainees will follow their Academy calendar and the timetable at the University, training in academies four days per week throughout the whole academic year. Each Friday trainees attend the University to learn as part of a professional cohort of training teachers and spend the rest of the week honing their teaching skills in their Academy. Each trainee will have a dedicated mentor within each of the placement schools as a point of contact and a person to support their personalised development.

The course will lead to a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) with the opportunity of gaining up to 60 credits at Masters level, as well as meeting the requirements of Teacher Standards (QTS).

About the training provider

Delta Academies Trust is a multi-academy trust (MAT) of over 50 academies in the Yorkshire and Humber region. Our MAT consists of Secondary, Primary, Infant, Junior, all through schools and Free Schools.

Delta has high retention rates with many School Direct trainees being employed as Newly Qualified Teachers within our Academies each year. Follow this link to discover more information about our teacher training offer. https://teach.deltatrust.org.uk/train-to-teach

We believe, due to the geographical location of all our academies, we can provide the best teacher training opportunities and provide excellent support through outreach work and sharing best practices. There are many career opportunities available to all our trainees who succeed on the School Direct Programme. We support, motivate and inspire teachers throughout their career to become leaders of the future. We strongly believe the excellence in the quality of training teachers receive, leads to excellence in education for children.

Interview process

Suitable applicants will be invited to a face-to-face interview session held at one of our secondary academies. During this interview candidates will carry out a teaching activity and a formal interview.

We run weekly interviews and candidates will be invited to our next interview session.

International candidates

You’ll need the right to study in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:

  • are an Irish citizen
  • have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
  • have indefinite leave to remain in the UK

If you do not already have the right to study in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa. The main visa for fee-paying courses (those that you have to pay for) is the Student visa.

To apply for a Student visa, you’ll need to be sponsored by your training provider.

Sponsorship is not available for this course.

If you need a visa, filter your course search to find courses with visa sponsorship.

Alternatively, check if you’re eligible for a different type of visa, such as a Graduate or Family visa, that allows you to train to be a teacher without being sponsored.

International qualifications

If your qualifications come from a non-UK institution, we may want to see a ‘statement of comparability’ from UK ENIC. This will show us how they compare to UK qualifications.

You can call Get Into Teaching on 0800 389 2500 for:

  • guidance on the UK equivalents of your qualifications
  • a free statement of comparability once you’ve submitted your application (if we ask you for this)
