A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

About the course

Isle of Wight primary training in either mainstream or SEND primary so please state your preference in your application. Training in school and learning ‘on the job’ alongside experienced teachers is the best way to gain first-hand experience of teaching. Your training year will be underpinned with regular theory and pedagogy sessions delivered at our dedicated training centre on the Island. 80% of your training will based in school e.g. four days a week and you attend formal training on day five.

We believe it is important that trainees feel part of the school environment from Day 1 so we interview with a partner school so you feel part of their community before you officially start.

To ensure you have the best start in school we deliver pre-course training on 12 and 13 July and 31 August and 1 and 2 September 2022 before starting in school on 5 September. These training days are delivered in our dedicated training centre where you will meet fellow trainees, gain an understanding of the programme and receive the underpinning training that best prepares you for your first few days in school e.g. behaviour management, lesson observations, Teacher’s Standards etc. Our trainees say they really value these sessions.

Every trainee is allocated a mentor who is a highly-experienced teacher and will offer personalised support and guidance throughout the year. Weekly mentor meetings will focus on setting short and long-term targets as well as reviewing your progress against the Teachers’ Standards. You will feel like a valued member of staff as you will attend staff meetings and school training sessions. Assessment takes place in a variety of forms e.g. weekly formal lesson observations, weekly review meetings, academic assignments and gathering evidence towards the Teachers Standards.

You will be assigned a host school for the autumn and summer term and in the spring term you will spend a minimum 6 weeks in another school to teach in another Key Stage. All school placements are discussed with you and organised by us.

On successful completion you will achieve a PGCE with QTS. We are proud of our strong track record and that many of our alumni trainees are now mentors on ur programme.

School placements

Our partner schools are among the best that the Island has to offer and were selected for the quality of education they provide our Isle of Wight children. We offer a range of training experiences to our trainees and we also give you the opportunity to experience teaching in one of our Portsmouth schools. Working in a diverse setting with children whose first language is not English is a tremendous experience (maximum 2 days and travel is paid for).

Placements are made on an individual basis, considering your travel time from home; careful pairing of mentors with trainees to give you the best school based experience possible.

When shortlisting for interview we select you based on your geographical area, skills and experience. This code is specifically recruiting for schools on the Isle of Wight. The interview stage is an opportunity to select applicants who show great potential to teach.

We interview in mainstream primary schools unless you have told us you specifically want to train in a Special School. As you will know your placement school early on you have the advantage of feeling part of that community from the beginning. You will have the chance to visit school before you start to meet your mentor and pupils.

You will spend the autumn and summer term in your host school and then in the spring term you will teach in a different Key Stage and school.

Our School Direct route has the advantage of 38 weeks in school so you experience the full academic year cycle which prepares you for your Early Career Teacher training year (ECT). You will spend four days in school and one day in training gradually building up your teaching hours as the weeks progress.

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree at class 2:2 or above, or equivalent.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English, maths and science, or equivalent qualification.

We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English, maths or science.

Personal qualities

We are looking for confident, enthusiastic, ambitious and talented graduates who are passionate about improving educational outcomes for children of all abilities. You should have some experience working with young people within the age group you wish to teach. This may be as little as a few days school experience or other work or voluntary work with young people. If you are a career changer then we know you will have many transferrable skills to share in the classroom. Most importantly you need to be a good communicator and someone who enjoys encouraging young people to learn.

Other requirements

You need to be a competent user of ICT.

Disclosure and Barring Service We have a duty to protect children and ensure that they are not put at risk. Successful completion of an Enhanced Disclosure Certificate from the DBS. This is free once you have enrolled.

Medical Fitness Teaching is physically and mentally demanding and there are fitness requirements set by the DfE for applicants to initial teacher training programmes. Successful candidates will be sent a relevant health questionnaire to complete. Your GP may charge a fee.

Fees and financial support

The course fees for UK students in 2022 to 2023 are £9,250.

You may be eligible for some funding to support your training.

There are two types of funding available for primary teacher training and depending on your circumstances you may receive a tuition fee loan and maintenance loan and additional financial support if you are a parent or have a disability.

Our excellence in training leads to our School Direct trainees successfully passing the course and gaining employment. Training in school and learning ‘on the job’ alongside experienced teachers is the best way to gain first-hand experience of teaching. Your training year will be underpinned with regular theory sessions and pedagogy delivered both at our dedicated alliance training centre and, for secondary, University. Typically you will be based in school four days a week and attend training on day five. This is a full-time PGCE course; you will spend 80% of your time in local schools and 20% in training centre.

Interview process

Your application is important to us and we will carefully consider you for interview. We usually host our interviews in school involving key staff throughout the process. This means that the school can select trainees who are ‘best fit’ for them.

Interview day schedule includes: Written task, group discussion, micro teach, interview and short teaching session

You will be given at least one week’s notice to prepare for your interview. We appreciate that you will feel a little nervous and we take that into account. We look for your potential to teach and how you engage with and interact with pupils. Feedback from applicants shows that they really value our interview days.

Once accepted you will be invited to our pre- course training days in July.

Selection criteria

We are looking for potential, not the finished article.

Applicant qualities:

Confident, articulate and who can communicate clearly in written and spoken English. Command the attention of young people and adults. Can demonstrate a passion for working with young people. Understand the importance of being professional and committed. Be open to learning and adaptable to changing situations.
Work collaboratively as a member of a team. A willingness to work beyond the ‘school day’. Have a good sense of humour and an ability to laugh at oneself. Be resilient and in good health. Be confident in the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). Have gained some school experience so you know that a school environment is for you.

International students

We can sponsor Student visas, but this is not guaranteed.

You do not need a visa if you already have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, or if you’re an Irish citizen.

Candidates with qualifications from non-UK institutions may need to provide evidence of comparability by applying for a UK ENIC statement.
