PGCE with QTS
A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.
It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.
Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

About the course
LEVEL 6 MODULES:
- Key Stage 1 and 2 core curriculum (including Maths, English, Science and ICT);
- Professional Studies;

MASTER’S LEVEL MODULES:
Compulsory module: Equality, Inclusion and Citizenship.
Options: You will be able to choose an option. The following are examples: SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disability); Inquiry Based Science Learning; Raising Achievement in Mathematics; Exploring Mathematics; Connect, Consume, Create: ICT in the Primary School; Language, Literature and Learning; Performing Arts; and Early Years Education.
We shortlist trainee teachers who can demonstrate the following, as well as meet our entry requirements:
A personal statement which will be marked against the following criteria:
- Written in Standard English with no ambiguities or grammatical errors;
- The candidate’s ability to reflect upon what they have learned from their experience in an educational setting;
- The candidate’s ability to reflect upon how their individual qualities and skills would be an asset to primary schools.
Applications must be supported by two strong academic and/or employer references. On enrolment, original certificates of degree awards and GCSEs must be produced.
We will invite shortlisted applicants to an interview.
- The first part of the interview day will consist of a Maths, English and Science skills audit.
- Candidates will then be asked to deliver a storytelling session to a class (20 minutes max), followed by a short reflection on this session with the interview panel.
- Candidates will then be required to give a short presentation demonstrating an awareness of the role of a teacher, as well as some knowledge of current issues in primary education.
- Finally, candidates will undertake a formal interview which will include a series of questions.
How school placements work
Students will undertake two placements during their training year.
The first placement will take place in an Alternative Education Setting (AES) for 12 days in the latter part of the Autumn Term. This placement is arranged by the trainee and must take place in a ‘school’ setting in England as defined in Section C2.3 ITT Criteria (2016, p.19-20), e.g. a Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) or a Special School.
The second placement is in a consecutive Key Stage in a different school to your main setting. This placement lasts for 18 days and takes place in the latter part of the Spring Term. Students will be allocated a placement in a school within Gipsy Hill Federation. The placement is a teaching placement and teaching will be graded.
Students will receive a salary on the unqualified teacher scale at point one (UQ01) for Inner London.
University fees will be covered by the Federation.
Financial support isn’t available for this course because it comes with a salary.
If you choose a course without a salary, you may be eligible for financial support while you study, including bursaries, scholarships and loans.
Honours degree (2:2 or above) from a United Kingdom Higher Education Institution or equivalent qualification from abroad.
GCSE grade C/4 or above in English Language, Mathematics and a Science subject.
Equivalency tests from Equivalency Testing (http://www.equivalencytesting.com) or A*Star Equivalency (https://www.astarequivalency.co.uk/) . Science equivalency test MUST be in combined science.
All equivalency tests must be passed by 1 May 2019.
If you’ve got qualifications from outside the UK, you’ll need to get a statement of comparability from NARIC.

About the training provider
Kingswood Primary School is the lead school for Gipsy Hill Federation (GHF), a group of 6 primary schools across the boroughs of Lambeth and Southwark. All our schools provide an optimum learning environment in which high achievement, positive self-esteem, respect and educational excellence are valued by everyone in a caring and supportive atmosphere.

About the accredited body
The School Direct route at GHF works in partnership with London South Bank University (LSBU). You will receive the same input from the University as PGCE students and at the end of the year-long course receive Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a PGCE, which includes Masters Level modules. Students spend a minimum of 1 day per week at University and the rest of their time in our family of schools.
