A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

About the course

During the programme you will spend at least 120 days in schools and around 40 days in centre-based training. Our training is designed by a highly qualified team of senior teachers and leading academics and is primarily based in school.

Training at the Centres The training days include sessions in Subject Studies, SEND and inclusion, children’s mental health, behaviour and voice. Our training takes place in our training centres and in some of the very best secondary schools in Southend. The programme also gives you access to all Canterbury Christ Church University facilities.

Training in School Evidence shows that the best learning comes from training alongside the highest quality teachers, and with us, you benefit from a significant amount of real school experience as you work alongside the best teachers in our area. During the year you will have practical classroom experience in at least two differing schools.

Specialisms We offer free additional training in Special Educational Needs and Disability and Leadership. All trainees are offered the opportunity to gain a sports coaching qualification during the year.

Assessment Throughout the programme you will be regularly assessed by both school mentors and your SCITT-based tutors

Academic work You also have the opportunity to study for a PGCE by submitting one written assignment, one written research project and a written assignment with presentation.

Support You will be assigned your own tutor, who will meet with you regularly, a subject tutor and a school mentor whose role it is to train and support you in school. You will also have access to an extended support network of experienced teachers and mentors throughout your course.

By the end of the year you will:

  • Have an excellent understanding of the National Curriculum along with the requirements for assessment and relevant examination specifications

  • Be able to plan and prepare for lessons and set students’ learning objectives with confidence

  • Have strong classroom management skills

  • Know how to address personalise learning to ensure that all pupils are included and can achieve their potential

Interview process

We have a rigorous recruitment process which is in two parts.

Part One includes a presentation and panel interview, along with a literacy test and subject knowledge audit. If you are successful at part one you will be invited to part two.

Part Two you will deliver a 30 minute lesson in one of the partnership schools. This will be observed by up to two experienced teachers and feedback given. Following this an offer will / will not be made.

Working in partnership with local secondary schools to train inspiring and skilled teachers who can give the children of Southend the best start in life. 

The members of the Southend SCITT partnership are: Belfairs Academy, St Bernard’s High School, Chase High School, Cecil Jones Academy (dormant partner for 2018-19), The Eastwood Academy, The FitzWimarc School, The King Edmund School, St Martin’s School, Shoeburyness High School, Southend High School for Boys, Southend High School for Girls, St Thomas More High School, Westcliff High School for Girls

During your training year you will have two placements in contrasting schools.

Financial support

You could be eligible for either:

  • a scholarship of £28,000
  • a bursary of £26,000

With a scholarship or bursary, you’ll also get early career payments of £2,000 in your second, third and fourth years of teaching (£3,000 in some areas of England).

To qualify for a scholarship you’ll need a degree of 2:1 or above in Modern Languages (French) or a related subject. For a bursary you’ll need a 2:2 or above in any subject.

You can’t claim both a bursary and a scholarship - you can only claim one.

Our fees for the course are £9,250 Unsalaried For high quality graduates who want to be part of a school team from day one. A degree 2:2 or above awarded by a UK university, or a recognised equivalent qualification; 50% of the degree must be relevant to the subject taught; if the degree does not link closely, A level in that subject and Subject Knowledge Enhancement course is required.

GCSE English and Maths at grade C / 4 or above (or equivalent). 

All teachers are expected to be competent in Fundamental English and mathematics therefore candidates will be assessed at recruitment.

Although not compulsory, we recommend candidates complete recent school based experience in a UK secondary school.

Offers are conditional pending a DBS Check.

About the training provider

We are a large dynamic partnership of schools and two SCITTs with many years of experience behind us. Our excellent training is supported by expert practitioners in more good and outstanding schools throughout Southend. Our sole purpose is to provide outstanding education for the young people of Southend and beyond by training excellent teachers. Due to the outstanding reputation we hold locally for the provision of rigorous and effective training 100% of our trainees gain employment each year, often within partner schools.

Programmes The course takes one academic year to complete, full time. Not only will you gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) by training with us, but you will also receive professional training in educational theory leading to a PGCE award with masters level credits (validated by Canterbury Christ Church University). As a result, you will begin your teaching career with excellent practical teaching skills and a deep understanding of the underpinning educational theory enabling you to work effectively. All elements of the programme are delivered in partnership with Essex and Thames SCITT ( and are taught by experienced, practising teachers.

Support We pride ourselves on offering bespoke support and guidance during your training through your Tutors and School-Based Mentors and we continue this into your first year of teaching with our NQT support team.

Training with disabilities and other needs

We employ a specialist in Occupational Health, and working together, we can accommodate the needs of any applicant we feel has the potential to become a good teacher and therefore an asset to our schools.
We accept trainees every year with dyslexia and/or dyspraxia and have a number of specialist mentors who can provide bespoke advice and guidance. All trainees with disabilities will have allocated sessions with a centre-based tutor who can ensure that any reasonable adjustments are made to your training. We pride ourselves on our approach to trainee wellbeing. We work extensively with other services to ensure that we provide you with the best possible support. We offer coaching and access to counselling services. All our staff are trained mental health first aiders. Taught sessions include mindfulness, stress management and resilience training.
